Globally, under-nutrition accounts for > 3 million deaths annually among children < 5 years, with Kenya having ~ 35,000 deaths. This study aimed to identify factors associated with malnutrition in children aged < 5 years in western Kenya.

We conducted a hospital-based unmatched case-control study between May and June 2017. selleck chemicals Cases were defined as children aged 6-59 months with either z-score for weight-for-height ≤ -2SD or ≥ +2SD; weight-for-age ≤ -2SD or ≥ +2SD; or height-for-age ≤ -2SD. Controls were children aged 6-59 months with age-appropriate anthropometric measurements. Cases were consecutively recruited while systematic random sampling was used to select controls. Data from interviews and clinical records were collected and entered into Epi-Info, which was used to run unconditional logistic regression analyses.

A total of 94 cases and 281 controls were recruited. Of the cases, 84% (79/94) were under-nourished. Mother not having attended ante-natal clinic (OR = 7.9; 95% CI 1.5-41.2), deworming (OR = 0.8; 95% CI 0.4-1.2), and pre-lacteal feeding (OR = 1.8; 95% CI 1.1-3.0) were associated with under-nutrition. Delayed developmental milestones (AOR = 13.9; 95% CI 2.8-68.6); low birth weight (AOR = 3.3; 95% CI 1.4-7.6), and paternal lack of formal education (AOR = 4.9; 95% CI 1.3-18.9) were independently associated with under-nutrition.

The absence of proper infant and young child feeding practice results in malnutrition. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is potentially a major factor affecting child feeding practices. However, there is limited evidence about the effect of intimate partner violence (IPV) on a minimum acceptable diet. Therefore, in this study, we hypothesized that IPV will be associated with a lack of a minimum acceptable diet among children aged 6-23 months.

We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) 2016. All child-mother pairs that participated in EDHS 2016 from all regions of Ethiopia were included. The analysis included mother-child pairs where 6-23 months aged children with mothers who were ever in a committed partnership and interviewed for domestic violence were involved. The data were weighted considering enumeration areas as a cluster and place of residence as a stratum. A binary logistic regression analysis was done to identify factors independently associatedving child feeding practice and reducing malnutrition and its consequences. Further studies that focus on possible community-based interventions aiming to decrease IPV are recommended.

The first biosimilar of recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) launched in Europe was Bemfola® in 2014 following a clinical development programme demonstrating efficacy and safety to the satisfaction of the European Medicines Agency. Since then the increasing use of biosimilar rFSH has provided the opportunity to study both effectiveness across the whole population and the variation of rFSH use during routine clinical care in a real-world setting in Spain.

This is a real-world study of 1222 women treated in 26 assisted reproduction treatment centres throughout Spain providing experience of the use of a biosimilar recombinant follicle stimulating hormone in four distinct populations. The four populations studied were poor responders, suboptimal responders, normal responders and oocyte donors. The primary endpoint was the total number of oocytes retrieved. Secondary endpoints included number of days of rFSH stimulation, total dose of rFSH administered, number of MII oocytes, number of fertilized oore 16.0%, (8/50), 22.4% (49/219), 30.6% (97/317) respectively and clinical pregnancy rates were 23.2% (10/43), 30.4% (59/194) and 37.0% (114/308) respectively. Adverse events were reported in only 7 of 1222 women (0.6%).

Overall the results were consistent with the national ART results reported for Spain, hence this study provides reassurance of the clinical effectiveness of a biosimilar rFSH used in a real world setting.
