Studies have shown that systemic levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) are elevated in cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in populations resident in high income countries. However, little is known about the association of BCAAs and AAAs with metabolic syndrome and its components in Asian Indian (AI) and Black African (BA) populations.

The aim of this study was to describe the association of BCAAs and AAAs with the metabolic syndrome, its individual components and insulin resistance in AI and BA populations.

Serum samples collected from AI (n = 349) and BA (n = 369) subjects were used to measure levels of BCAAs and AAAs by ultra-pressure liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Anthropometric, demographic and cardiometabolic variables were measured in all subjects.

The sum of BCAAs and AAAs was higher in AIs compared to BAs. The BCAAs and AAAs were positively associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and its individual components. Thi by VAT. Further studies are required to determine whether BCAAs and AAAs are aetiological factors in CMDs and how VAT modulates their serum levels.A fiber mat was developed to visually determine the oxidation of edible oils, based on the colorimetric reaction of Schiff's reagent and aldehydes - the major volatile formed during lipid oxidation. The mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Schiff's reagent containing various amounts of glycerol were electrospun to form the fiber mats. Oxidized soybean oils were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the PVA/Schiff's reagent fiber mat for indicating oxidation of the oils. The results showed that the fiber mats obtained had average fiber diameters of less than 100 nm. Upon hexanal exposure, the fiber mats turned from white to purple. Higher amount of glycerol led to larger color change of the fiber mats and shorter response time to hexanal. A linear relationship (R2 = 0.96) was observed between the color change of the mat and hexanal concentration (15-117 μmol L-1). The visual determination limit of the mat for hexanal was 29 μmol L-1. The color change of the PVA/Schiff's reagent fiber mat was increased with an increase of soybean oil oxidation. Out of the seven soybean oils tested, the PVA/Schiff's reagent fiber mat was able to correctly indicate the oxidation states of six oils. The result suggested that the visual determination method developed is a promising method to indicate the oxidation of edible oils, which can be performed easily by non-experts.Graphical abstract.Biopharmaceuticals are usually administered intravenously with frequent dosing regimens which may decrease patient compliance. Controlled-release formulations allow to reduce the frequency of injections while providing a constant dosing of the biopharmaceutical over extended periods. These formulations are typically produced by emulsions, requiring high amounts of organic solvents and have limited productivity. Hot-melt extrusion (HME) is an alternative technology to produce controlled drug delivery systems. It is a continuous solvent-free process, leading to a small ecological footprint and higher productivity. However, it may induce thermolabile compounds' degradation. In this work, the impact of the formulation and extrusion temperature on lysozyme's bioactivity and release profile of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based extended release formulations were evaluated using a design-of-experiments (DoE) approach. The lysozyme-loaded PLGA microparticles were produced by HME followed by milling. It was observed that the in vitro release (IVR) profile was mainly affected by the drug load; higher drug load led to higher burst and total lysozyme release after 14 days. HME temperature seemed to decrease lysozyme's activity although this correlation was not statistically significant (p value = 0.0490). Adding polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) as a plasticizer to the formulation had no significant impact on the lysozyme release profile. The burst release was effectively mitigated with the inclusion of a washing step. Washing the microparticles with water reduced the burst release by 80% whereas washing them with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution eliminated it. In conclusion, HME is demonstrated to be suitable in producing controlled-release microparticles of small biopharmaceuticals. Graphical abstract.
Myotonic dystrophy is a disorder affecting multiple organs including skeletal muscles and causes respiratory failure. We describe a patient who developed respiratory failure, with delayed diagnosis of myotonic dystrophy type 1 as the cause.

A 62-year-old woman developed acute onset of dyspnea after showing hypertension and tachycardia and was transported to our hospital. On arrival at our institution, SpO
was 80% with a non-rebreather mask. With a diagnosis of acute phase heart failure, she underwent tracheal intubation. However, weaning from the respirator was difficult in the intensive care unit (ICU). A detailed interview revealed that her brother was affected with myotonic dystrophy type 1. She was also diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy type 1 by a genetic test.

MoS2 nanosheets with large specific area were employed as photoactive material, gold nanoparticles were used as signal amplification unit and immobilization matrix of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid, anti-m6A antibody was adopted as methylated RNA recognition reagent, and poly(U) polymerase-mediated RNA chain extension and Ru(NH3)63+ were used as assisted signal amplification unit. With the sensitization effect of Ru(NH3)63+, the photoactivity of WS2 nanosheets was improved greatly, which also improved the sensitivity. Using visible-light excitation and ascorbic acid as electron donor, the sensitive determination of methylated RNA was achieved by monitoring the photocurrent change with different concentrations of methylated RNA. This photoelectrochemical immunosensor has a wide linear relationship with methylated RNA concentration from 0.05 to 35 nM under optimal experimental conditions. The low detection limit of 14.
