Nano-structured shunts were durable, leak-proof, and demonstrated biocompatibility and patency in rabbit eyes. Today, more people die from cancer than a combination of several diseases. And in females, breast and cervical malignancies remain the most common types. Currently, cervical and breast cancer are the most diagnosed gynecological cancer type amongst black females in the Southern Sahara while amongst males prostate cancer is on the upward trend. With many of them still dependent on medicinal plants as a form of therapy and the need to identify new therapeutic agents, we have identified a commonly used medicinal plant Tulbaghia violacea Harv. commonly known as Itswele lomlambo (Xhosa), wilde knoffel (Afrikaans) and Isihaqa (zulu) to evaluate its anticancer properties at a molecular biology level. In this study, we evaluated the molecular mechanism of T. violacea extracts in regulating cell death in various cancer cell lines. To achieve this, T. violacea was collected, dried before crushing into a fine ground powder. Three organic solvents namely, methanol, hexane, and butanol at 10 g per 100 mL were used as extraction solvents. Each cell line was treated with varying concentrations of the plant extract to identify the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50). The IC 50 was later used to analyse if the extracts were inducing apoptosis using annexin V analysis. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms by which apoptosis was induced was analysed by qPCR, western blots. All three extracts exhibited anticancer activity with the most cytotoxic being methanol extract. p53 expression was significantly increased in treated cells that correlated with increased caspase activity. The results point to possible activation of apoptosis following treatment with hexane extracts.Drought is a complicated abiotic stress factor with severe effects on rice growth and production. Weedy rice is a valuable genetic resource that possesses a strong capacity for drought tolerance, cold tolerance, and salt tolerance, and is an excellent material for studying rice tolerance. Here, according to comprehensive tolerance to drought index D, accession WR16 was selected based on strong drought tolerance among 133 studied weedy red rice germplasms. WR16 was compared with Oryza sativa ssp. Japonica. cv. IAPAR-9, a reference genotype originating from Brazil. In addition, accession WR24 was classified as moderately tolerant to drought accessions. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were combined to identify 38 co-upregulated proteins related to drought tolerance, and targeted parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) was used to precisely quantify and verify nine proteins in the complex backgrounds. Result showed that six proteins were significantly (Fisher's exact P value less then 0.05) related to drought tolerance in accessions WR16 and WR24. Among them, OS09T0478300-01, OS09T0530300-01, and OS01T0800500-01 formed a combined defense system to respond to drought stress in weedy rice. Results of these studies provide comprehensive information for precisely identifying and verifying tolerance to drought proteins and lay a solid theoretical foundation for research on drought tolerance mechanisms.In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association between occupational exposures and sickness absence (SA), the mediating role of respiratory symptoms, and whether genetic susceptibility to SA upon occupational exposures exists. Logistic regression was used to examine associations and structural equation modelling was used for mediation analyses. Genetic susceptibility was investigated by including interactions between occupational exposures and 11 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Biological dust, mineral dust, and pesticides exposure were associated with a lower prevalence of any SA (OR (95% CI) = 0.72 (0.58-0.89), 0.88 (0.78-0.99), and 0.70 (0.55-0.89), respectively) while gases/fumes exposure was associated with a higher prevalence of long-term SA (1.46 (1.11-1.91)). Subjects exposed to solvents and metals had a higher prevalence of any (1.14 (1.03-1.26) and 1.68 (1.26-2.24)) and long-term SA (1.26 (1.08-1.46) and 1.75 (1.15-2.67)). SorafenibD3 Chronic cough and chronic phlegm mediated the association between high gases/fumes exposure and long-term SA. Two of 11 SNPs investigated had a positive interaction with exposure on SA and one SNP negatively interacted with exposure on SA. Exposure to metals and gases/fumes showed a clear dose-response relationship with a higher prevalence of long-term SA; contrary, exposure to pesticides and biological/mineral dust showed a protective effect on any SA. Respiratory symptoms mediated the association between occupational exposures and SA. Moreover, gene-by-exposure interactions exist.The Devonian Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary marks one of the five main extinction intervals of the Phanerozoic Aeon. This time was characterized by two pulses of oceanic anoxia, named the Lower and Upper Kellwasser events, during which massive marine biodiversity losses occurred. This paper presents high-resolution magnetic susceptibility, X-ray fluorescence elemental geochemistry and carbon isotope datasets obtained from the Steinbruch Schmidt F-F boundary section (Germany). These records lead to an astronomical time calibration of the environmental changes associated with the two ocean anoxia pulses. Cyclostratigraphic interpretation indicates deposition of the black argillaceous Lower and Upper Kellwasser horizons over ~ 90 and ~ 110 kyr, respectively; approximately equivalent to the duration of one short eccentricity cycle. This study confirms that the succession of events within the Upper Kellwasser event is paced by obliquity, under a low-eccentricity orbit. Hence, astronomical insolation forcing likely contributed to the expansion of ocean anoxia and other environmental perturbations associated with these two crises. The new floating chronology established for the Steinbruch Schmidt section is anchored in numerical time by means of a radio-isotopic date, obtained from a bentonite layer interbedded between the two Kellwasser horizons. After anchoring, this time scale gives a high-precision age of 371.870 ± 0.108 Ma for the F-F boundary.
