Important considerations include how scaffold materials and geometry affect regeneration of dental tissues, the importance of using dental cells in these applications, and the role of signaling molecules for creating a clinically relevant bioengineered dental implant. We conclude with potential new directions for research that would allow the burgeoning field of regenerative dentistry to achieve its lofty goals.
Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the seventh coronavirus identified as causing disease in humans. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has multiple potential pathophysiologic interconnections with endocrine systems, potentially causing disturbances in glucose metabolism, hypothalamic and pituitary function, adrenal function and mineral metabolism. A growing body of data is revealing both the effects of underlying endocrine disorders on COVID-19 disease outcome and the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on endocrine systems. However, comprehensive assessment of the relationship to endocrine disorders in children has been lacking.
In this review, we present the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on endocrine systems and review the current literature on complications of COVID-19 disease in underlying paediatric endocrine disorders. We provide recommendations on management of endocrinopathies related to SARS-CoV-2 infection in this population.
With the surge in COVID-19 cases worldwide, it idistinct and outcomes from adult studies cannot be extrapolated. Evidence emerging from paediatric studies provides some guidance but highlights the need for more research in this area.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is currently a major pandemic challenge, and cancer patients are at a heightened risk of severity and mortality from this infection. In recent years, immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) use to treat multiple cancers has increased in oncology, but equally has raised the question of whether ICI therapy and its side-effects is harmful or beneficial during this pandemic.
A combination of published literature in PubMed between January 2010 and December 2020, recommended guidelines in non-cancer patients, and clinical experience was utilized to outline recommendations on glucocorticoid timing and dosing regimens in ICI-treated patients presenting with AI during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The potential immune interaction between ICIs and COVID-19 require major consideration because these agents act at the intersection between effective cancer immunotherapy and increasing patient susceptibility, severity and complications from the SARS-CoV-2 sepsis. We conducted this study to investigate whether the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the rate of DKA and previously identified risk factors in children presenting with T1D.
We performed an extension of a retrospective analysis of all paediatric patients (age≤18) newly diagnosed with T1D within a tertiary care referral centre between 01/01/2017 and 09/14/2020. Demographics, insurance coverage and clinical documents 30days before their T1D diagnosis were abstracted to assess forsymptoms at diagnosis,laboratory values (blood glucose, HbA
, venous pH and bicarbonate) and any healthcare encounters within 30days of their diagnosis of T1D.
412 patients with T1D [171 F241M; 370 pre-COVID era42 post-COVID era] were included. The percentages of DKA diagnoses at admission were very similar between the pre-COVID and post-COVID groups (47% vs. 48%), as were the severity (13% vs. 14% mild DKA; 33% vs. 31% moderate or severe DKA).

Severe COVID-19 has been anecdotally associated with high insulin requirements. It has been proposed that this may be driven by a direct diabetogenic effect of the virus that is unique to SARS-CoV-2, but evidence to support this is limited. To explore this, we compared insulin requirements in patients with severe COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 viral pneumonitis.
This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with severe COVID-19 admitted to our intensive care unit between March and June 2020. A historical control cohort of non-COVID-19 viral pneumonitis patients was identified from routinely collected audit data.
Insulin requirements were similar in patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 viral pneumonitis after adjustment for pre-existing diabetes and severity of respiratory failure.
In this single-centre study, we could not find evidence of a unique diabetogenic effect of COVID-19. We suggest that high insulin requirements in this disease relate to its propensity to cause severe respiratory failure in patients with pre-existing metabolic disease.
