These findings establish a critical role for CD36 in B cell responses and may also contribute to our understanding of CD36-mediated autophagy in other cells as well as in B cell lymphomas that have been shown to express the receptor.Abbreviations AICDA/AID activation-induced cytidine deaminase; ATG5 autophagy related 5; ATP adenosine triphosphate; BCR B-cell receptor; CPG unmethylated cytosine-guanosine; CQ chloroquine; DC dendritic cells; FOB follicular B cells; GC germinal center; Ig immunoglobulin; LPS lipopolysaccharide; MAP1LC3/LC3 microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3; MFI mean fluorescence intensity; MZB marginal zone B cells; NP-CGG 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenylacetyl-chicken gamma globulin; OCR oxygen consumption rate; oxLDL oxidized low-density lipoprotein; PC plasma cells; Rapa rapamycin; SQSTM1/p62 sequestosome 1; SRBC sheep red blood cells; Tfh follicular helper T cells; TLR toll-like receptor.Mathematical modeling has played a prominent and necessary role in the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with an increasing number of models being developed to track and project the spread of the disease, as well as major decisions being made based on the results of these studies. A proliferation of models, often diverging widely in their projections, has been accompanied by criticism of the validity of modeled analyses and uncertainty as to when and to what extent results can be trusted. Drawing on examples from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases of global importance, we review key limitations of mathematical modeling as a tool for interpreting empirical data and informing individual and public decision making. We present several approaches that have been used to strengthen the validity of inferences drawn from these analyses, approaches that will enable better decision making in the current COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
Morphological changes characteristic of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) are common in soccer players. However, the clinical relevance of such anatomical variations is still not well-defined.
We hypothesized that high alpha angle values and/or acetabular retroversion index (ARI) are correlated with rotational range of motion (ROM) of the hip and that there are clinical-radiological diferences between the dominant lower limb (DLL) and nondominant lower limb (NDLL) in professional soccer players.
Cross-sectional.
Level 3.
A total of 59 male professional soccer players (average age 25.5 years, range 18-38 years) were evaluated in the preseason. As main outcome measures, we evaluated the alpha angle and the ARI and hip IR and ER ROM with radiographic analysis.
The measurements taken on DLL and NDLL were compared and a significant difference was found between the sides in the ER (
= 0.027), where the DLL measures were 1.54° (95% CI, 0.18-2.89) greater than the NDLL. There were no significant differuence on available hip rotational movement in professional soccer athletes.Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic in the USA, effective interventions to reduce HIV risk among cisgender women have been lacking. Although oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective in pharmacologically preventing HIV infection, there is a gap between the recommended use of PrEP and PrEP uptake among eligible women. This study aimed to identify the role of patient-provider communication in PrEP decision-making among women considering PrEP. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 41 PrEP-eligible women in Philadelphia and New York City. A thematic analysis of the responses was conducted, and a conceptual model developed and confirmed as analysis continued. Of the women interviewed, 53.6% were African American and 29.3% were Latina. Women noted that having a trusting relationship with their health care provider, receiving a tailored recommendation for PrEP based upon their specific needs and using their health care provider as support were crucial facilitators of PrEP decision-making. Lack of provider knowledge about PrEP, perceived health care provider stigma about their drug use and sexual activity, and lack of care continuity were all identified as barriers to effective communication. Study findings can inform future interventions to enhance patient-provider communication about PrEP and increase PrEP uptake among women.
Evidence suggests that shoulder and elbow injuries account for 31% to 37% of all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) baseball injuries, and up to 69% of NCAA baseball injuries are the result of noncontact and overuse mechanisms. TGX-221 Early sport specialization may contribute to the high rates of upper extremity injuries in college baseball players.
Higher specialization by age 13 years would be associated with worse subjective throwing arm function and a greater history of shoulder and elbow injury.
Cohort study.
Level 2.
Survey data were collected from college baseball players (N = 129) during midseason of the spring 2019 baseball season. Participants were stratified in low, moderate, and high specialization groups based on a 3-criteria sports specialization questionnaire. Participants' throwing arm function was measured using the Functional Arm Scale for Throwers and the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic shoulder and elbow questionnaires. Participants' history of a shoulder or elbow injury thaupper extremity health in college baseball players.
Early specialization in baseball may be detrimental to long-term upper extremity health in college baseball players.A natural language processing (NLP) application requires sophisticated lexical resources to support its processing goals. Different solutions, such as dictionary lookup and MetaMap, have been proposed in the healthcare informatics literature to identify disease terms with more than one word (multi-gram disease named entities). Although a lot of work has been done in the identification of protein- and gene-named entities in the biomedical field, not much research has been done on the recognition and resolution of terminologies in the clinical trial subject eligibility analysis. In this study, we develop a specialized lexicon for improving NLP and text mining analysis in the breast cancer domain, and evaluate it by comparing it with the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). We use a hybrid methodology, which combines the knowledge of domain experts, terms from multiple online dictionaries, and the mining of text from sample clinical trials. Use of our methodology introduces 4243 unique lexicon items, which increase bigram entity match by 38.
