To investigate factors associated with predoctoral students' intention to use dental technology in future practice using the theory of planned behavior.

A comprehensive survey was developed consisting of 29 questions grouped in three main domains knowledge, perception, and suggestions. After students had completed their digital dentistry didactic courses in 2019, the University of Iowa-College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics D2, D3, and D4 classes completed the survey. The D1 class was excluded because they had not finished their digital dentistry didactic courses. The survey data were tabulated for each class separately to compare trends among classes. Each response was analyzed individually before creating scores for the various subdomains. A linear regression analysis was used to create the final model for the outcome variable (intention to use technology).

The response rate was 95% (n=232). Vismodegib cell line The mean age of participants was 25.7 years (SD = 2.7). There were significant differences between the classes in their knowledge (p<0.0001), perceived quality of training (p<0.0001), and all perceptions related to digital dentistry. Controlling for significant covariates among higher level students, there were significant associations between intention to use dental technology and greater knowledge scores (p=0.05), attitude (p<0.0001), subjective social norms (p=0.02), and perceived control on the future use of technology (p<0.0001).

Students may be motivated to use digital technology when they have good knowledge, feel that others are using it or endorsing its use, and perceive that they have control in their future practice.

Smoking is a major public health problem. However, its association with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is inconclusive.

To find the association between smoking during pregnancy and HDP.

We searched PubMed, Ovid and Cochrane Library up to March, 2021, using terms including "smoking" and "HDP".

Observational studies that assessed the relationship between smoking during pregnancy and HDP were included.

Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), and other necessary data were extracted. Stata16.0 MP was used to analyze statistics.

A total of 13 studies were included. Meta-analysis revealed that smoking during pregnancy was a protective factor for HDP (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.67-0.92), gestational hypertension (OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.69-0.79), and pre-eclampsia (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.58-0.73). Subgroup analysis showed that smoking during pregnancy was a risk factor for HDP in Asia but a protective factor in Europe and North America. Neither quitting smoking before pregnancy nor during pregnancy had a statistically significant association with HDP.

This meta-analysis revealed that smoking during pregnancy might prevent HDP, gestational hypertension, and pre-eclampsia. Smoking during pregnancy was a risk factor for HDP in Asia but a protective factor in Europe and North America.

Learning and memory are especially sensitive to manipulations of translational control mechanisms, particularly those that target the initiation step, and translation initiation at synapses could be a means of maintaining synapse specificity during plasticity. Initiation predominantly occurs via recruitment of ribosomes to the 5' mRNA cap by complexes of eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs), and the interaction between eIF4E and eIF4G1 is a particularly important target of translational control pathways. Pharmacological inhibition of eIF4E-eIF4G1 binding impairs formation of memory for aversive Pavlovian conditioning as well as the accompanying increase in polyribosomes in the heads of dendritic spines in the lateral amygdala (LA). This is consistent with a role for initiation at synapses in memory formation, but whether eIFs are even present near synapses is unknown. To determine whether dendritic spines contain eIFs and whether eIF distribution is affected by learning, we combined immunolabeling with serial section transmission electron microscopy (ssTEM) volume reconstructions of LA dendrites after Pavlovian conditioning. Labeling for eIF4E, eIF4G1, and eIF2α-another key target of regulation-occurred in roughly half of dendritic spines, but learning effects were only found for eIF4E, which was upregulated in the heads of dendritic spines. Our results support the possibility of regulated translation initiation as a means of synapse-specific protein targeting during learning and are consistent with the model of eIF4E availability as a central point of control.Organismal locomotion mediates ecological interactions and shapes community dynamics. Locomotion is constrained by intrinsic and environmental factors and integrating these factors should clarify how locomotion affects ecology across scales. We extended general theory based on metabolic scaling and biomechanics to predict the scaling of five locomotor performance traits routine speed, maximum speed, maximum acceleration, minimum powered turn radius, and angular speed. To test these predictions, we used phylogenetically informed analyses of a new database with 884 species and found support for our quantitative predictions. Larger organisms were faster but less maneuverable than smaller organisms. Routine and maximum speeds scaled with body mass to 0.20 and 0.17 powers, respectively, and plateaued at higher body masses, especially for maximum speed. Acceleration was unaffected by body mass. Minimum turn radius scaled to a 0.19 power, and the 95% CI included our theoretical prediction, as we predicted. Maximum angular speed scaled higher than predicted but in the same direction.
