Probe filtering has the potential to improve assay accuracy.
The authors assessed associations between childhood and adolescent adversity and arrest among individuals with first-episode psychosis (FEP). The authors also sought to determine which domains of adversity had the greatest impact and whether associations varied by gender.

Data were analyzed from 247 patients with FEP admitted to inpatient psychiatric units between August 2008 and June 2013. Analyses focused on self-reported history of arrest and seven scales of past adversity, with 14 subscales reduced to three factors. Binary logistic regression and negative binomial regression determined associations between the three childhood adversity factors and having ever been arrested and number of arrests, respectively.

Past experience of violence and environmental adversity was significantly (p<0.001) associated with both history of arrest (odds ratio=2.29) and number of arrests (β=0.60), and this association was stronger for female patients than for male patients.

The authors used public data sources to assess this claim the Research Condition and Disease Categorization Database, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the NIMH Strategic Plan for Research for 2020-2024. From 2016 to 2019, NIMH expenditures on bipolar disorder research decreased 25%, and those for schizophrenia research decreased 17.5%. From 2003 to 2019, NIMH support for treatment trials for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder decreased 90%. NIMH's Strategic Plan for Research for 2020-2024 suggests that the shift toward basic research will continue. Because NIMH's primary purpose is to develop better treatments for current patients as well as future ones, the authors recommend that the ratio of basic to clinical research be readjusted to approximately 5050.During the past year, clinicians and the public have been focused on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its associated societal and economic effects. A tsunami results when an earthquake on the ocean floor creates huge waves that can wreak devastation far distant from the original upheaval, especially when warnings are ignored. Similarly, underlying global and national demographic and risk factor profiles have for some time presaged an overwhelming burden of CCDs. However, although the pandemic has created additional impetus that unless heeded will amplify the consequences of this burden, the rapid adaptations and innovations in care and research prompted by the urgent response to it may also offer us the means to stem this flood.
