1. The study of the runes and their meaning is a study of personal development, spiritual growth and the spread of consciousness throughout human societies and into the universe. The Elder Futhark Runes are a complete system of magic, and the oldest form of western wisdom.
- Whilst still shrouded in mystery, runic appears to be used frequently in the modern wizarding world. The runes themselves appear to be used principally as a stand-ins for letters of the Latin alphabet, as well as whole words (as logograms). For example, Dumbledore's copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, the name Albus Dumbledore was written entirely in runic, requiring translation before mass-production for the general public.
- As protective pendants or charms.
- Creating spell
- As alphabet for mundane, daily writing purposes.
- As incantations, spoken or sung aloud, for initiations, power, or connection with supernatural energies.

2. Ihwaz is the Rune of Defence. Ihwaz is the symbol of the runes’ magic powers. Wisdom in adversity. You have defensive, deflective and aversive powers. Protection, patience, and foresight stand against sudden attack. As Rune number 13, Ihwaz is the origin of the “unlucky 13” Anglo-Saxon superstition. Yew trees are planted to keep out unwanted animals. The best longbows were made from Yew trees. This rune shouldn’t be feared as it also implies endurance and continuity. It contains protective magic, so Ihwaz generally represents safety from attacks and a great defense weapon.

3. Ansuz (pronounced Awn-sooze) is the fourth rune of the Futhark and of Freya's Aett. It represents the A sound in English. The word literally means a "God" referring to the Gods and Goddesses of the Aesir and Vanir. Ansuz is particularly associated with Odin and when reversed, with Loki his messenger.

4. Jera is Rune of harvest and reward for, or reaction to, right actions in a horizontal (naturally ordered) cyclical process. Rune of peace on the land and in the heart.

5. There are two types of bind runes. Normal bind runes are formed of two (or rarely three) adjacent runes which are joined together to form a single conjoined glyph, usually sharing a common vertical stroke (see Hadda example below). Another type of bind rune called a same-stave rune, which is common in Scandinavian runic inscriptions but does not occur at all in Anglo-Saxon runic inscriptions, is formed by several runic letters written sequentially along a long common stemline (see þ=r=u=t=a=R= =þ=i=a=k=n example shown above). In the latter cases the long bind rune stemline may be incorporated into an image on the rune stone, for example as a ship's mast on runestones Sö 158 at Ärsta and Sö 352 in Linga, Södermanland, or as the waves under a ship on DR 220 in Sønder Kirkeby, Denmark.
