Analyzing epidemiological data with simplified mathematical models of disease development provides a link between the time-course of incidence and the underlying biological processes. Here we point out that considerable modeling flexibility is gained if the model is solved by simulation only. To this aim, a model of atherosclerosis is proposed a Markov Chain with continuous state space which represents the coronary artery intimal surface area involved with atherosclerotic lesions of increasing severity. Myocardial infarction rates are assumed to be proportional to the area of most severe lesions. The model can be fitted simultaneously to infarction incidence rates observed in the KORA registry, and to the age-dependent prevalence and extent of atherosclerotic lesions in the PDAY study. Moreover, the simulation approach allows for non-linear transition rates, and to consider at the same time randomness and inter-individual heterogeneity. Interestingly, the fit revealed significant age dependence of parameters in females around the age of menopause, qualitatively reproducing the known vascular effects of female sex hormones. For males, the incidence curve flattens for higher ages. According to the model, frailty explains this flattening only partially, and saturation of the disease process plays also an important role. This study shows the feasibility of simulating subclinical and epidemiological data with the same mathematical model. The approach is very general and may be extended to investigate the effects of risk factors or interventions. Moreover, it offers an interface to integrate quantitative individual health data as assessed, for example, by imaging.This commentary introduces the special section on the outcomes of the Queensland Alcohol-related violence and Night-time Economy Monitoring project and outlines the political and policy context of the interventions put in place under the Queensland government's Tackling Alcohol-Fuelled Violence strategy. Here we probe the structure of HAlOH+ (H2 O)n-1 , n=9-14, by infrared multiple photon spectroscopy in the region of 1400-2250 cm-1 . Based on quantum chemical calculations, we assign the features at 1940 cm-1 and 1850 cm-1 to the Al-H stretch in five- and six-coordinate aluminum(III) complexes, respectively. Hydrogen bonding towards the hydride is observed, starting at n=12. The frequency of the Al-H stretch is very sensitive to the structure of the hydrogen bonding network, and the large number of isomers leads to significant broadening and red-shifting of the absorption of the hydrogen-bonded Al-H stretch. The hydride can even act as a double hydrogen bond acceptor, shifting the Al-H stretch to frequencies below those of the water bending mode. The onset of hydrogen bonding and disappearance of the free Al-H stretch coincides with the onset of hydrogen evolution.

No studies have focused on the relationship between parity and infant age and their impact on psychosocial outcomes, particularly in a Canadian context.
To explore the relationship between parity and infant age on perceived maternal self-efficacy, social support, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum depression.
Women from three Canadian provinces within the first 6months postpartum completed standardized online questionnaires. Multivariate analysis of covariance was used to examine the primary aim.
A total of 561 women (56.5% primiparous, 55.1% infant 0-3months) participated. There were significant main effects for both parity (P<.001) and age of infant (P<.001), but no significant interaction (P=.463). Primiparous women had lower maternal self-efficacy (P=.004) and higher postpartum anxiety (P=.000) than multiparous women. Women with younger infants had more perceived social support (P=.002). Women with older infants had higher levels of postpartum anxiety (P=.003) and depression (P=.000).
The transition that women experience, independent of parity, within the first six months is dynamic with women of older infants experiencing more postpartum mental health concerns and less perceived social support. Our findings emphasize that postnatal support should extend beyond the typical six-week follow-up period.
Additional studies are warranted to determine ways to provide ongoing support throughout the first six months and beyond to improve maternal well-being and address postpartum needs.

Identifying factors related to cognitive status, especially in later life, is of major importance. We concentrate on the analysis of the temporal evolution of cognitive abilities in the elderly population. We propose to model the individual cognitive functioning as a multidimensional latent process that accounts also for the effects of individual-specific characteristics (gender, age, and years of education). The proposed model is specified within the generalized linear latent variable framework, and its efficient estimation is obtained using a recent approximation technique, called dimensionwise quadrature. It provides a fast and streamlined approximate inference for complex models, with better or no degradation in accuracy compared with standard techniques. The methodology is applied to the cognitive assessment data from the Health and Retirement Study combined with the Asset and Health Dynamic study in the years between 2006 and 2010. We evaluate the temporal relationship between two dimensions of cognitive functioning, that is, episodic memory and general mental status.
