Tarot adalah kartu yang umum digunakan untuk kepentingan spiritual ataupun untuk tujuan meramal nasib. Tarot yang paling populer saat ini adalah versi Rider Waite Smith. Jumlah kartu yang digunakan dalam tarot Rider Waite Smith ada 78 kartu. 22 kartu disebut Arcana Mayor (Rahasia Besar) dan 56 kartu disebut Arcana Minor (Rahasia Kecil).
Arcana Mayor disebut juga sebagai kartu Trump karena memiliki keunggulan jika dibandingkan Arcana Minor. Kartu Arcana Mayor adalah simbol dari aspek fisik, intelektual, emosional dan spiritual manusia. Kartu ini menggambarkan kekuatan, harapan, ketakutan, kelemahan, bagian yang paling baik dan yang paling gelap dari kehidupan seseorang. Oleh sebab itu dalam tebaran ini, kita hanya menggunakan kartu Arcana Mayor dengan jenis tebaran 3 kartu.

Kartu Arcana Minor terdiri dari empat elemen. Secara general, ada elemen api, elemen air, elemen udara dan juga elemen tanah. Untuk elemen tanah diwakili oleh the Pentacles. Untuk elemen Air diwakili oleh the Cups, elemen api diwakili oleh the Wands dan elemen Udara diwakili oleh the Swords.
Elemen Air, diwaliki the Cups, dimana ini menjelaskan mengenai hubungan antar pribadi dan juga perasaan yang timbul dari sebuah hubungan tersebut. Jika elemen air terlalu banyak muncul dan mendominasi sebuah pembacaan, maka akan banjir.
Elemen Api, diwaliki Wands, secara garis besar ini adalah kegiatan fisik. Aktifitas fisik disimbolka oleh kartu elemen api. Jika terlalu banyak dan mendominasi adalah kartu elemen api, maka akan terjadi kebakaran, terlalu banyak kegiatan fisik tanpa memperdulikan perasaan.
Elemen Udara diwakili dengan Swords, ini secara umum berarti fikiran, keputusan dan komunikasi. Ini berkaitan dengan aktifitas mental dan juga interaksinya. Bisa dengan lisan, tulisan bahkan telepati. Kalau yang muncul elemen udara saja, maka yang terjadi bisa mengakibatkan angin ribut..
Elemen tanah diwakili Pentacles. Ini secara general diartikan dengan hal-hal konkrit, nyata dan membumi. Termasuk jabatan, materi dan juga uang.
