How to Interview Software Engineers Without a Technical Background
"Interviewing software engineers can feel tricky if you don’t have a technical background. It might seem like you need to speak in code or understand every programming language to hold a good conversation. But the good news is, you don’t! Hiring the right person isn’t just about knowing what JavaScript does—it’s also about figuring out how someone thinks, works with others, and solves problems. You don’t need to be a hacker for hire to run a great interview.

Start by focusing on soft skills. Ask questions that show how the candidate communicates, handles setbacks, and works on a team. For example, you might ask, “Can you tell me about a time you got stuck on a project? What did you do next?” or “How do you work with designers or product managers?” These kinds of questions can tell you whether someone is a problem-solver and a team player—both super important qualities in a software engineer.

Next, talk through their past projects. Ask candidates to explain something they’ve built or worked on recently. You don't need to understand every technical detail, but pay attention to how clearly they describe their work. A great engineer should be able to talk about their project in a way that makes sense to anyone.

If your company has a technical team, let them handle the questions about code or systems. Your job is more about figuring out how well the person fits with the company’s culture and work style.
