METHOD Thirty-two park-based ASPs are included in the final sample, including 141 staff and 593 children. Staff reported on organizational culture (rigidity, proficiency, resistance) and climate (engagement, functionality, stress), and children's social skills and problem behaviors. Children and their parents reported on program quality indicators (e.g., activities, routines, relationships). Parents also completed a children's mental health screener. RESULTS A series of Hierarchical Linear Models revealed that proficiency and stress were the only organizational predictors of program quality; associations between stress and program quality were moderated by program enrollment and aggregated children's mental health need. Higher child- and parent-perceived program quality related to fewer staff-reported problem behaviors, while overall higher enrollment and higher aggregated mental health need were associated with fewer staff-reported social skills. CONCLUSIONS Data are informing ongoing efforts to improve organizational capacity of urban after-school programs to support children's positive social and behavior trajectories.n/a.Purpose To identify current practices related to the assessment, monitoring and discussion of bodyweight, growth and obesity in neuromuscular clinics for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).Methods A cross-sectional, online survey was distributed using snowball sampling to healthcare providers working with children with DMD across Canadian neuromuscular clinics. Summary and descriptive statistics were calculated. Content analysis was performed on open text responses.Results Thirty-seven responses were received, representing a range of healthcare disciplines. Height and weight were routinely assessed by 32/37 (87%) respondents, although only 21/37 (57%) responses reported having a clinic standard for measuring height and 23/37 (62%) for weight. While 32/36 (89%) reported discussing weight during consultations, only 13/37 (35%) felt confident doing so. Dietitians were considered the most appropriate person to discuss and manage weight with children and families, although only 17/37 (46%) reported having a dietitian involved in their clinic.Conclusions Neuromuscular clinics could benefit from implementing consistent and recommended growth assessment practices. Parents' reports of difficulty with coparenting problems predicted child problem behaviors. For primary caregivers, parenting self-efficacy mediated the relation between coparenting quality and problem behaviors. Observed undermining behavior significantly positively predicted child appropriate behavior across specific tasks and observed partner support behavior significantly negatively predicted child appropriate behavior across specific tasks. Researchers have harnessed the power of stem cells to understand many aspects of developmental biology in model organisms (e.g. worms, mice) and more recently, in humans. Human stem cells in culture recapitulate development. For example, formation of the brain occurs prenatally and follows a specific pattern of timing and cell generation. Human stem cells in the culture dish follow a similar pattern when exposed to developmental cues and can thus be used to understand aspects of prenatal human brain development that are not accessible by other means. Disease-specific iPSCs are a valuable tool to model neural development in specific neurodevelopmental disorders like Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a classic developmental disorder; mistakes that are made during development of a particular organ system result in the characteristics of the disorder. In the brain, mistakes during prenatal brain development lead to intellectual disability. Trisomy 21 (Ts21) iPSCs generated from somatic cells of Down syndrome individuals may enable us to understand the mistakes made during Down syndrome brain development.
