We have focused on the following issues 1) the current status of understanding the mechanisms of detoxification and uptake restriction of metal(loid)s regulated by Se; 2) the optimal dose and speciation of Se, and stage of plant growth that is optimal for application; 3) the differences in the efficiency of different application methods of Se including seed priming, base application, and foliar spray of Se fertilizers; 4) the possibility of using Se along with other methods to reduce multiple metal(loid) accumulation in crops; and 5) potential risks when Se is used to reduce metal(loid) accumulation in crops.Chironomids are aquatic insects that are known to be pollution tolerant. We have recently demonstrated that endogenous chironomid microbiota protects its host from toxic metals. Following these findings, we hypothesized that under different environmental conditions, a different bacterial consortium will evolve. Our aim was to explore the change in chironomid larval microbiota composition triggered by exposure to toxic copper and hexavalent chromium. AMI-1 Chironomid larvae were collected from the environment and treated in the laboratory with copper, hexavalent chromium, and no metal (control). After six days, the microbial composition of the surviving larvae was examined. We found a significant change in larval microbiota composition between the three treatments and for different copper concentrations. The abundance of specific taxa varied significantly between the treatments. At the genus level, the abundance of some genera (e.g. Yersinia, Acinetobacter) increased in the presence of copper, and some genera (e.g. Yersinia, Dysgonomonas, Delftia, Enterococcus) increased in the presence of hexavalent chromium, compared to the control. The change in the larval microbiota composition was rapid and metal-specific. We suggest that each larva hosts a consortium of bacterial species that can proliferate under a specific environmental change and thus, protect the insect under unstable environmental conditions.Various proxy records have been used for the understanding of environmental and climate variations during the Holocene. Here, for the first time, we use meteoric 10Be isotope measurements performed on sediments from a drill core collected at the Kunlun Pass (KP) on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (NETP) to investigate hydroclimate changes during the Holocene. The 10Be flux suggests relative low levels in the Early Holocene, followed by a sharp increase to high values at around 4 ka BP (4 ka BP = 4000 years before present). Afterwards, the 10Be flux remains on a high level during the Late Holocene, but decreases slightly towards today. These 10Be deposition patterns are compared to moisture changes in regions dominated by the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM), East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), and the Westerlies. Different from the gradual changes in monsoon patterns, the 10Be data reveal low levels during the Early Holocene until ~4 ka BP when an obvious increase is indicated and a relative high level continues to this day, which is relatively more in agreement with patterns of the Westerlies. This finding provides a new evidence for a shift in the dominant pattern of atmospheric circulation at the KP region from a more monsoonal one to one dominated by the Westerlies. Our results improve the understanding of non-stationary interactions and spatial relevance of the EASM, the ISM and the Westerlies on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Associations of bisphenol A (BPA) levels with renal disease are inconsistent. The present prospective study aims to evaluate the association of serum BPA levels with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. At baseline 1370 participants (mean age 61.7 years, 58.8% females) free of kidney disease and cancer were followed up nearly 10 years. Baseline serum BPA concentration was measured with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to investigate relationship between serum BPA levels and incident CKD risk. During a 10-year follow-up, 246 individuals developed CKD. Baseline serum BPA concentration was 2.92 (1.00, 5.27) ng/mL. At baseline, after adjustment for multiple covariates serum BPA levels were negatively correlated with eGFR levels (β = -0.068, P = 0.009). Compared to those with low levels of serum BPA, participants with high levels had a significant negative association with CKD [ORs (95% CI) = 0.35 (0.25, 0.50), P less then 0.001], and this association was not modified by conventional risk factors. The negative associations remained in females but not in males (P for interaction = 0.016). Significant interaction between baseline eGFR and serum BPA levels on CKD risk was also found (P for interaction = 0.027), Except subjects with 60-70 mL/min/1.73 m2 eGFR at baseline, inverse association robustly existed between serum BPA levels and incident CKD risk in the other eGFR subgroups. Further studies are needed to validate our findings.Tetracyclines (TCs) are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics having vast human, veterinary, and aquaculture applications. The continuous release of TCs residues into the environment and the inadequate removal through the conventional treatment systems result in its prevalent occurrence in soil, surface water, groundwater, and even in drinking water. As aqueous TCs contamination is the tip of the iceberg, and TCs possess good sorption capacity towards soil, sediments, sludge, and manure, it is insufficient to rely on the sorptive removal in the conventional water treatment plants. The severity of the TCs contamination is evident from the emergence of TCs resistance in a wide variety of microorganisms. This paper reviews the recent research on the TCs occurrence in the environmental matrices, fate in natural systems, toxic effects, and the removal methods. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of TCs in environmental samples and the associated technology developments are analyzed. The benefits and limitations of biochemical and physicochemical removal processes are also discussed.
