The coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) is characterised by a heterogeneous clinical presentation, a complex pathophysiology and a wide range of imaging findings, depending on disease severity and time course. We conducted a retrospective evaluation of hospitalized patients with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection, clinical signs of COVID-19 and computed tomography (CT) scan-proven pulmonary involvement, in order to identify relationships between clinical, serological, imaging data and disease outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Clinical and serological records of patients admitted to two COVID-19 Units of the Abruzzo region in Italy with proven SARS-CoV-2 pulmonary involvement investigated with CT scan, assessed at the time of admission to the hospital, were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty-one patients (22 females and 39 males) of median age 65 years were enrolled. Fifty-six patients were discharged while death occurred in 5 patients. None of the lung abnormalities detected by CT was different between discharged and deceased patients. No differences were observed in the features and extent of pulmonary involvement according to age and gender. Logistic regression analysis with age and gender as covariates demonstrated that ferritin levels over the 25th percentile were associated with the involvement of all 5 pulmonary lobes (OR = 14.5, 95% CI 2.3-90.9, p = 0.004), the presence of septal thickening (OR = 8.2, 95% CI 1.6-40.9, p = 0.011) and the presence of mediastinal lymph node enlargement (OR = 12.0, 95% CI 1.1-127.5, p = 0.039) independently of age and gender. We demonstrated that ferritin levels over the 25th percentile are associated with a more severe pulmonary involvement, independently of age and gender and not associated with disease outcomes. The identification of reliable biomarkers in patients with COVID-19 may help guiding clinical decision, tailoring therapeutic approaches and ultimately improving the care and prognosis of patients with this disease.The spread of COVID-19 is closely related to the structure of human social networks. Based on 237 cases, by using epidemiological retrospective statistics, data visualization, and social network analysis methods, this paper summarized characteristics of patients with COVID-19 in Shaanxi, China, and analyzed these patients' dynamic contact network structure. The study found that there are many clustered infections through strong ties, about one-third of cases are caused by relatives' infection. In early stages of the epidemic, imported cases were the most, and in the later stages, local infection cases were the most. The infected people were mostly middle-aged men. Symptoms of imported cases occurred on average of 3 days after they arrived, and medical measures were taken 5 days later on average. All cases showed symptoms in less than 2 days on average and were then taken to medical treatment. The contact network can be divided into multiple disconnected components. The largest component has 12 patients. The average degree centrality in the network is 0.987, average betweenness degree is 0, average closeness degree is 0.452, and average PageRank index is 0.0042. The number of contacts of patients is unevenly distributed in the network.To characterize rod- and cone-pathway function in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the full-field electroretinogram (ERG). Dark-adapted (DA; rod-pathway) and light-adapted (LA; cone-pathway) ERGs were recorded from three-month-old 5xFAD and wild type (WT) mice. ERGs were elicited by achromatic flashes (0.01-25 cd-s-m-2). Amplitude and implicit time (IT) of the a-wave, b-wave, and oscillatory potentials (OPs) were calculated according to convention. In addition, the amplitude and IT of the photopic negative response (PhNR) were measured from the LA recordings. Amplitude and IT differences between the 5xFAD and WT groups were evaluated using quantile regression models. Under DA conditions, there were significant differences between the 5xFAD and WT groups in post-receptor function, whereas photoreceptor function did not differ significantly. Nedometinib Specifically, the DA a-wave amplitude did not differ between groups (p = 0.87), whereas the b-wave amplitude was reduced in the 5xFAD mice (p = 0.003). There were significant OP (p less then 0.001) and a-wave (p = 0.04) delays, but the a-wave delay may be attributable to a post-receptor abnormality. Under LA conditions, the only 5xFAD abnormalities were in the PhNR, which was reduced (p = 0.009) and delayed (p = 0.04). The full-field ERG can be abnormal in the 5xFAD model of AD, with the greatest effects on post-receptor rod pathway function. These results indicate that retinal electrophysiology may be a useful tool for evaluating neural dysfunction in AD.We investigated sex-related differences in the prognosis of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) using the Korea National Health Insurance Service database. From 2010 to 2016, 9524 patients diagnosed with HCM and had more than 1-year follow-up period were analyzed. The primary endpoint was the composite of cardiovascular death or new-onset heart failure (HF) admission. Propensity score-matching analysis was performed to adjust for different baseline characteristics. With a 4.4-years' median follow-up interval (range 2.0-6.6 years) and male predominance (77.6%), women with HCM were older (52.6 ± 9.7 vs. 51.4 ± 9.1, p less then 0.001), had lower incomes, more comorbidities based on Charlson comorbidity index. Women with HCM had a higher incidence of the primary endpoint than men (incidence rate 34.15 vs. 22.83 per 1000 person-years, log-rank p less then 0.001). Multivariable Cox analysis showed that female sex was a poor prognostic factor for the primary endpoint (HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.24-1.64, p less then 0.001). This was mainly driven by a higher incidence of new-onset HF admission (HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.34-1.80). However, there was no difference in the incidence of cardiovascular death between the sexes. This result was concordant in the propensity score-matched cohort. In conclusion, women with HCM have worse prognosis, which was mainly driven by a higher new-onset HF admission.
