Crystallography is an important science that impacts many areas of research. The number of users of crystallographic techniques has increased significantly over the past few decades, as diffractometers have become readily available and many commercial programs with user-friendly interfaces have been developed. The growth in computing power has led to the development of advanced methods that were unthinkable in the past. Yet at the same time, formal crystallography teaching has declined, with many programs no longer offering formal crystallography classes. This combination has resulted in many avoidable errors in data collection, processing, and interpretation of results. Making crystallographic teaching, both of theoretical concepts and hands-on training in data processing and analysis, available to the next generation of crystallographers is a crucial mandate. This paper gives a glimpse at several possible avenues to invite newcomers to a successful life in reciprocal space.Knowledge about the structure and function of biomolecules continues to grow exponentially, enabling us to "see" structural snapshots of biomolecular interactions and functional assemblies. At PDB-101, the educational portal of the RCSB Protein Data Bank, we have taken a storytelling approach to make this body of knowledge accessible and comprehensible to a wide community of students, educators, and the general public. For over 20 years, the Molecule of the Month series has utilized a traditional illustrated storytelling approach that is regularly adapted for classroom instruction. Similar visual and interactive storytelling approaches are used to present topical subjects at PDB-101 and full curricular materials and case studies for building a detailed narrative around topics of particular interest. TG101348 in vitro This emphasis on storytelling led to the Video Challenge for High School students, now in its 8th year. In this Article, we will present some of the lessons we have learned for teaching and communicating structural biology using the PDB archive of biomolecular structures.
The purpose of this study was to research the molecular transmission and genetic evolutionary characteristics among CRF07_BC-infected patients in a developed area in Eastern China.

Plasma samples from newly diagnosed HIV-1-positive patients from 2015-2018 and basic demographic and epidemiological information were obtained.
sequences from CRF07_BC-infected patients were selected for phylogenetic, molecular transmission network, and Bayesian evolutionary analyses.

sequences were successfully obtained from 258 samples of CRF07_BC. Phylogenetic analysis revealed 2 distinct lineages lineage 1 (66.3%, 171/258), primarily from men who have sex with men (MSM) and some heterosexual individuals, and lineage 2 (33.7%, 87/258), primarily from heterosexual individuals. Under an optimal genetic distance of 0.01 substitutions/site, 163 individuals (63.2%, 163/258) formed 23 groups comprising 6 clusters and 17 dyads in the networks. A distinctly large and rapidly growing cluster (C1) containing 105 individuals was active and rapid growth networks in regional CRF07_BC epidemics. Thus, unique region- and risk group-specific transmission network analysis based on a molecular approach can provide critical and insightful information for more effective intervention strategies to limit future HIV-1 transmission.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is common in people living with HIV (PLWH). Health care providers sometimes prescribe opioids to control pain, which may lead to opioid misuse. An interdisciplinary approach that includes physical therapy has been successful in managing MSK pain in various health care settings. Therefore, we sought to find the impact of recruiting a physical therapist (PT) on the number of opioid prescriptions and physical therapy referrals made by physicians in training to manage MSK pain in PLWH.

We performed a retrospective chart review of patients seen by Internal Medicine physicians in training in an HIV clinic in Detroit before (2017) and after (2018) recruiting a PT to the health care team and collected demographic and clinical data. We also surveyed the trainees to assess how the PT addition influenced their learning. Institutional review board waiver was obtained.

Results showed that of all PLWH seen at the clinic, 28/249 (11%) and 37/178 (21%) had chronic MSK pain in the 2017 and 2018 data sets, respectively. In 2017, all 28 patients with MSK pain were prescribed opioids. This decreased in 2018 after the PT addition (10/37 patients;
 < .0001). The number of physical therapy referrals significantly increased after the PT addition (2017 5/28 patients; 2018 17/37 patients;
 = .03). Trainees felt that the PT helped improve their examination skills and develop a treatment plan for patients.

The addition of a PT encouraged physicians in training to utilize nonopioid management of MSK pain in PLWH and enhanced their learning experience, as perceived by the trainees.

However, some clinicians still prescribe these therapies. We present a case of peripherally inserted central catheter-associated Nocardia nova endocarditis in a patient who had been receiving intravenous antibiotics for the management of chronic Lyme disease. This case highlights an important risk associated with the unscientific use of indwelling peripheral catheters and intravenous antibiotics for the management of such patients.
A population-based study of infective endocarditis (IE) in Olmsted County, Minnesota, provides a unique opportunity to define temporal and seasonal variations in IE incidence over an extended time period.

This was a population-based review of all adults (≥18 years) residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota, with definite or possible IE using the Rochester Epidemiology Project from January 1, 1970, through December 31, 2018. Poisson regression was used to characterize the trends in IE incidence; models were fitted with age, sex, calendar time, and season, allowing for nonlinearity and nonadditivity of their effects.

Overall, 269 cases of IE were identified over a 49-year study period. The median age of IE cases was 67.2 years, and 33.8% were female. The overall age- and sex-adjusted incidence of IE was 7.9 cases per 100 000 person-years (95% CI, 7.0-8.9), with corresponding rates of 2.4, 2.4, 0.9, and 0.7 per 100 000 person-years for
, viridans group streptococci (VGS),
species, and coagulase-negative staphylococci IE, respectively.
