Hydrocephalus is a global disease that disproportionally impacts low- and middle-income countries. Limited data are available from sub-Saharan Africa. This study aims to be the first to describe pediatric hydrocephalus epidemiology and outcomes in Lusaka, Zambia.
This retrospective cohort study included patients < 18 years of age who underwent surgical treatment for hydrocephalus at Beit-CURE Hospital and the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, from August 2017 to May 2019. Surgeries included ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertions, revisions, and endoscopic third ventriculostomies (ETVs) with or without choroid plexus cauterization (CPC). A descriptive analysis of patient demographics, clinical presentation, and etiologies was summarized, followed by a multivariable analysis of mortality and 90-day complications.
A total of 378 patients met the inclusion criteria. The median age at first surgery was 5.5 (IQR 3.1, 12.7) months, and 51% of patients were female (n = 193). The most common prespresence of any postoperative complication was the only significant predictor of mortality (OR 42.9 [95% CI 12.3-149.1], p < 0.001).

High avidity self-reactive B cells try to edit their BcRs by secondary or multiple VL-rearrangements to JL-rearrangements. If they do not manage to change their self reactivity, they are deleted by apoptosis. Low avidity self-reactive B cells are anergized, while B cells with no avidity to self are ignored. A rheostat crosslinking antigen-binding BcRs, self antigen complexed with pentameric IgM and Fcμ-receptor monitors high, low or no binding. PI3K and PTEN are the effectors of this self antigen-sensing device. In mature B cells this rheostat continues to function in the activation of resting B cells by foreign antigens which crosslink BcR, antigen and pentameric IgM with Fcμ-receptors.
The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of the use and prescribing patterns of anti-seizure medications (ASMs) over a six-year period, and to provide real-world evidence on medicine utilization of pediatric patients with epilepsy in China.
ASM prescriptions for pediatric patients written from 2013 to 2018 were extracted from the database of the Hospital Prescription Analysis Cooperative Project. Trends of ASM use were analyzed by total prescriptions, cost, age, sex, ASM class and specific ASM. Prescribing patterns of ASMs were also analyzed.
A total of 44,675 ASM prescriptions were extracted for analysis in this study. Throughout the study period, a slight increase of ASM prescriptions was observed from 6170 in 2013 to 8211 in 2018. Children aged between 6 and 18 years, accounted for 78 % of total prescriptions every year. ASM use in boys was about 1.5 times higher than that in girls. Large temporal fluctuations in the dominance of primary producers (i.e. macroalgae vs. phytoplankton) and, thus, in the available food items, were reflected in major changes in the diet and SI signals of several primary consumers, such as the amphipod Grandidierella japonica, the polychaetes Neanthes japonica and Capitella capitata, and omnivorous fishes (i.e. Mugil cephalus, Oreochromis niloticus, andand help to sustain the biological resources and the ecosystem services provided by the lagoon.The histone deacetylases (HDACs) are involved in growth, development and stress responses in many plants. However, the functions of HDACs in tea plant (Camellia sinensis L. O. Kuntze) and other woody plants remain unclear. Here, 18 CsHDAC genes were identified by genome-wide analysis in tea plant. The phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the CsHDAC proteins were divided into three subfamilies, namely, the RPD3/HDA1 subfamily (8 members), the SIR2 subfamily (4 members) and the plant specific HD2 subfamily (6 members). The expression patterns showed that most members of CsHDACs family were regulated by different abiotic stress. High correlation was found between the expression of the CsHDACs and the accumulation of theanine, catechin, EGCG and other metabolites in tea plant. Most of the CsHDAC proteins were negative regulators. We further studied a specific gene CsHD2C (NCBI-ID KY364373) in tea plant, which is the homolog of AtHD2C, encoded a protein of 306 aa. CsHD2C was highly expressed in leaves, young buds and stems.
