As an innovative additive manufacturing process, 4D printing can be utilized to generate predesigned, self-assembly structures which can actuate time-dependent, and dynamic shape-changes. Compared to other manufacturing techniques used for tissue engineering purposes, 4D printing has the advantage of being able to fabricate reprogrammable dynamic tissue constructs that can promote uniform cellular growth and distribution. For this study, a digital light processing (DLP)-based printing technique was developed to fabricate 4D near-infrared (NIR) light-sensitive cardiac constructs with highly aligned microstructure and adjustable curvature. As the curvature of the heart is varied across its surface, the 4D cardiac constructs can change their shape on-demand to mimic and recreate the curved topology of myocardial tissue for seamless integration. To mimic the aligned structure of the human myocardium and to achieve the 4D shape change, a NIR light-sensitive 4D ink material, consisting of a shape memory polymer andl distributions, but also extends the potential applications of 4D printing for tissue regeneration. The need to increase agricultural yield has led to an extensive use of antibiotics against plant pathogens, which has resulted in the emergence of resistant strains. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for new methods, preferably with lower chances of developing resistant strains and a lower risk to the environment or public health. Many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens use quorum sensing, a population-density-dependent regulatory mechanism, to monitor the secretion of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) and pathogenicity. Therefore, quorum sensing represents an attractive antivirulence target. AHL lactonases hydrolyze AHLs and have potential antibacterial properties; however, their use is limited by thermal instability and durability, or low activity. Here, we demonstrate that an AHL lactonase from the phosphotriesterase-like lactonase family exhibits high activity with the AHL secreted from the plant pathogen Erwinia amylovora and attenuates infection in planta. Using directed enzyme evolution, we were able to increase the enzyme's temperature resistance (T50, the temperature at which 50% of the activity is retained) by 8 °C. Then, by performing enzyme encapsulation in nanospherical capsules composed of tertbutoxycarbonyl-Phe-Phe-OH peptide, the shelf life was extended for more than 5 weeks. Furthermore, the encapsulated and free mutant were able to significantly inhibit up to 70% blossom's infection in the field, achieving the same efficacy as seen with antibiotics commonly used today to treat the plant pathogen. We conclude that specific AHL lactonase can inhibit E. amylovora infection in the field, as it degrades the AHL secreted by this plant pathogen. The combination of directed enzyme evolution and peptide nanostructure encapsulation significantly improved the thermal resistance and shelf life of the enzyme, respectively, increasing its potential in future development as antibacterial treatment.Photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications are limited by the low penetration of UV-visible light into biological tissues. Considering X-rays as an alternative to excite photosensitizers (PS) in a deeper tumor, an intermediate particle able to convert the X-ray energy into visible light (scintillating nanoparticle, ScNP) is necessary. Moreover, accumulation of PS in the target cells is also required. Genetically encoded proteins could be used as a photosensitizer, allowing the exclusive expression of PS inside the tumor cells. Here, the interaction of eGFP, KillerOrange, and KillerRed proteins with LaF3Tb3+ ScNP was investigated, for the first time, in terms of its physicochemical and energy transfer properties. The protein structure, stability, and function were evaluated upon adverse physiological conditions and X-ray irradiation. Optimal parameters for energy transfer from ScNP to the proteins were investigated, paving the way for the use of genetically encoded photosensitizers for applications in X-ray activated photodynamic therapy.Making field emitters with both low turn-on field (Eto) and high current emission stability is one of the keys to push forward their practical applications. Lestaurtinib mouse In the present work, we report the exploration of high-performance field emitters with designed sharp corners around SiC nanowires for fundamentally enhanced electron emission sites. The sharp corners with tailored densities are rationally created based on a facile etching technique. Accordingly, the emission sites and nanowires are integrated into a single-crystalline configuration without interfaces, which could offer the emitters with a robust structure to avoid the structural damage induced by the generated Joule heat and electrostatic forces over long-term field emission (FE) operation. Consequently, the Eto of the as-fabricated SiC field emitter is low down to 0.52 V/μm, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art one ever reported. Moreover, they have high electron emission stability with a current fluctuation of just 2% over 10 h, representing their promising applications in FE-based electronic units.
Research on the effect of occupation on cardiovascular health (CVH) among older women is limited.
Each of the 7 American Heart Association's CVH metrics was scored as ideal (1) or non-ideal (0) and summed. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of poor overall CVH (CVH score of 0-2) comparing women employed in each of the top 20 occupational categories to those not employed in that category, adjusting for age, marital status, and race/ethnicity.
1) Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks; 2) first-line supervisors of sales workers; 3) first-line supervisors of office and administrative support workers; and 4) nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides were more likely to have poor overall CVH compared to women who did not work in these occupations.
Several commonly held occupations among women were associated with poor CVH.
