Currently, how the ovarian activity is regulated at the molecular level remains to be determined. This study was conducted to investigate follicular development and gene expression patterns of yak ovarian tissues in the warm and cold seasons. Dynamics of follicular development was evaluated based on histological analyses and global gene expression was examined by using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology. Firstly, we found that follicle development of yak cows in cold season was different from that in warm season. Interestingly, ovaries collected from yaks in cold season contained a significant higher number of antral follicles and some of these follicles showed signs of polycystic structure, indicating abnormal granulosa cell function. RNA-seq analyses of ovarian tissues from non-pregnant adult yaks in cold and warm season revealed that a list of 320 transcripts were differentially expressed, specifically, 79 were up-regulated and 241 were down-regulated in the ovaries from yaks during the cold season. Further analysis demonstrated that transcripts associated with estrogen secretion and metabolism signaling pathway were altered, including FST, CYP1A1, PIK3R1 and PIK3R2. This study showed histological features of follicle development and revealed candidate genes that may have important roles in regulating ovarian activities in the yak seasonal reproduction. MRI clearly depicts the ectopic tooth buds and parotid aplasia in this condition, features that are diagnostic of partial facial duplication. MRI is diagnostic for this condition and can be useful to avoid misdiagnosis of a facial mass. BACKGROUND Bone shapes strongly influence force and moment predictions of kinematic and musculoskeletal models used in motion analysis. The precise determination of joint reference frames is essential for accurate predictions. Since clinical motion analysis typically does not include medical imaging, from which bone shapes may be obtained, scaling methods using reference subjects to create subject-specific bone geometries are widely used. RESEARCH QUESTION This study investigated if lower limb bone shape predictions from skin-based measurements, utilising an underlying statistical shape model (SSM) that corrects for soft tissue artefacts in digitisation, can be used to improve conventional linear scaling methods of bone geometries. METHODS SSMs created from 35 healthy adult femurs and tibiae/fibulae were used to reconstruct bone shapes by minimising the distance between anatomical landmarks on the models and those digitised in the motion laboratory or on medical images. AIM To identify the experiences and attitudes of men on pre-registration nursing programmes in Western countries and the barriers and enablers to their recruitment and retention. Studies in English were included if they were from Western countries, were published since 2000 and related to men's experiences of, or attitudes to, applying for or studying pre-registration nursing. RESULTS Records were de-duplicated and 2063 records were screened and 44 articles assessed for eligibility of which 23 articles relating to 22 empirical studies were included in the review. Findings were categorised into the following themes recruitment experiences/reasons for studying nursing; gender experiences; barriers, difficulties and challenges with programme; and factors affecting retention. CONCLUSION Evidence suggests that many men who come into nursing have a family member or acquaintance who is a nurse or that they have had contact with a male nurse as a patient or carer. Motivating factors such as financial security, career mobility and the opportunity to have a job in a caring profession were reported. Improved career advice at school is needed and shortened graduate programmes could be attractive. On programme, some clinical areas were easier for male students, while in others, treatment refusal could cause difficulties. Being in a minority and gender stereotyping can affect experiences. Ensuring equitable treatment, providing additional support and placements in clinical areas with more men could minimise these challenges. Understanding what influences student performance in bachelor level nursing studies is imperative so educators can develop programs that straddle the art and science conundrum and lead to graduate success. Grit is a non-cognitive trait, a drive that keeps an individual on task through difficult circumstances for sustained periods of time. Grit might well represent a key factor in our understanding of why one student succeeds while another withdraws. OBJECTIVES To examine measures of grit in the context of demographic characteristics of nursing students and their impact on student self-perceived academic and clinical performance.
