Hey Jessica! Sally forwarded your message about the Tent City volunteer opportunity and I wanted to be sure and respond to you before tonight... My thought is that Tent City is something we might want to stay away from as a group-wide serving opportunity. There is some controversy and disagreement surrounding the goals and philosophy behind the Tent City movement that could potentially hinder our group's effectiveness at making this an appropriate, missional service opportunity.

I think it's awesome you brought this opportunity up (you're one of the only people who have put forth effort here!); however, I would totally encourage you to investigate some other organizations that might present some very ideal service opportunities. Organizations such as the Union Gospel Mission, Northwest Harvest, Food Lifeling, Bread of Life Mission, Seattle Urban Academy, or New Horizons would be excellent places to look.

As a proud SPU grad, I'm all in favor of "engaging the culture and changing the world," but I would just hesitate bringing some of our group's women and children to serve & observe at Tent City.

Again, I'd be happy to unpack these thoughts tonight, but just wanted to make sure I/we acknowledged your message. Please don't stop with the ideas!
