To analyse the evolving social role of female nurses in the American Civil War context in terms of gender, class and race and to examine whether their caring efforts correspond to the beginnings of a new nursing professional identity.

Historical research.

Thirteen American Civil War nurses' triumphal narratives written between 1865-1902 were analysed. The search and work were carried out between 2012-2020. Women's history and thematic analysis provided, respectively, the theoretical and analytical frameworks.

The arrival of the war was the catalyst for change. The nurses' autobiographies were written in a hostile environment where class and racial tensions had to be released. This analysis points to nursing care being transformed from its traditional domestic traits to a progressive and intentional professional dimension.

American Civil War nurses' autobiographies offer an innovative vision of their lives and their nursing work. Specifically, the autobiographical accounts provide new perspectives on the evolution of the authors' social dimension in terms of class, race and gender as well as the development of a new nursing professional identity in that context. Impact Illuminating overlooked meanings hidden in nurses' autobiographies improves women's visibility and their contribution to the history of nursing.

Recently, treatment decision making for large vestibular schwannomas (VS) in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) has become increasingly challenging due to the availability of multiple therapeutic options including surgery, bevacizumab (an anti-VEGF), radiosurgery, and observation; and it often remains an arbitrary decision based on local practices without firm recommendations. Our objective is to discuss the multimodal treatment options for Koos IV VS in a national reference center for NF2.

Single-institution retrospective cohort study.

All NF2 patients with Koos IV VS who visited our center, the National Reference Center for NF2 Rare Disease in Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital of Paris, between January 2016 and December 2018 were included. Clinical charts, radiology, operative reports, and audiograms were reviewed.

Among 54 NF2 patients with Koos IV VS (mean maximum extrameatal diameter 34 mm; range17-62 mm), 27 were operated on for 28 VS; 21 were treated with bevacizumab; and six were observed. In the surgical group, VS resections were gross total, near-total, subtotal, or partial in 32%, 25%, 32%, and 11%, respectively; and a good (House-Brackmann grades I-II) facial nerve function was achieved in 81.5% at 1 year. Selleck Bersacapavir Hearing was preserved in 14%, 78%, and 66% of the surgical (n = 7), bevacizumab (n = 9), and observation (n = 3) patients, respectively.

All therapeutic options, including surgery and/or bevacizumab and occasionally observation, should be proposed to NF2 patients with large VS in the setting of dedicated centers. A decision-making tree is proposed for Koos IV VS management based on tumor evolution, hearing and clinical status of the patient, and contralateral VS size.

4, case series study, historically controlled study Laryngoscope, 131E98-E107, 2021.The infusion of Chrysophyllum albidum was investigated for its antidiabetic mechanism by studying its ability to promote glucose uptake and utilization as well as its modulatory effect on metabolic activities linked to type 2 diabetes in isolated psoas muscle. Isolated psoas muscle was incubated with different concentrations of the infusion in the presence of glucose at 37°C for 2 hr. The infusion improved muscle glucose uptake, with concomitant elevated muscular levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ectonucleotidase activities, while depleting malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, adenosine triphosphatase, acetylcholinesterase, glycogen phosphorylase, glucose 6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-biphosphatase, and lipase activities. It also maintained muscular morphology, while increasing magnesium, calcium, and iron levels. The infusion inhibited α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities in vitro. LC-MS analysis of the infusion revealed the presence of phenolics. These results indicate that C. albidum may mediate antidiabetic activities by stimulating muscle glucose uptake and modulation of key metabolisms linked to diabetes. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The African star apple is among the underutilized fruits consumed for nutritional and medicinal purposes in Western Africa. The fruits are usually wasted during its season leading to postharvest loss owing to poor utilization. The present study gives credence to its use in treating diabetes and its complications. Thus, the fruits can be utilized in the development of cheap and affordable nutraceuticals for the management of diabetes which has been reported for its high-cost treatment. Utilization of the fruits will also reduce its postharvest loss and improve its economic values.
Few studies of eating disorder (ED) symptoms among young people in Iran have been conducted. This cross-sectional study examined ED symptoms, assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q).

Adolescent boys (n = 498) and girls (n = 607) aged 12-19 years, recruited from schools in four different regions of Iran, completed a survey that included the EDE-Q. ED symptoms, namely, EDE-Q global scores and the occurrence of specific ED behaviors, were compared between boys and girls.

Girls had higher global scores and were more likely to report regular extreme dietary restriction than boys (16.6 vs. 12.0%). The effect sizes for these differences were small. The regular occurrence of other behaviors (girls vs. boys-binge eating 21.1 vs. 18.8%; self-induced vomiting 3.3 vs. 5.4%; laxative misuse 6.1 vs. 7.6%; excessive exercise 5.3 vs. 4.4%) did not significantly differ by gender. Twelve percent of boys and 12.9% of girls met criteria for an operational definition of "probable ED case."

ED symptoms appear to be relatively common among Iranian adolescent boys and girls.
