Food waste management has been a global challenge with significant economic and environmental impacts. A community-based food waste treatment scheme for Glasgow, UK is proposed. The food waste was treated by small-scale wet, mesophilic anaerobic digestion. Biogas was combusted in a combined heat and power plant to generate heat and electricity for each community. 201.39 kWh of electricity and 246.09 kWh of thermal energy could be provided to local communities per tonne of food waste treated. A total of 52,762 tonnes of food waste were produced each year in the city. Net-present worth analysis was employed to evaluate the scheme's economic feasibility. The scheme's environmental impacts were evaluated using life cycle assessment. The entire system saved 92.27 kg CO2-eq. per tonne of food waste treated and had a net-present worth of £ 3.187 million with a carbon tax of 50 £ tonne-1 and a biogas yield of 190 m3 tonne-1. Influences of organics on partial nitritation performance were investigated in a lab-scale sequencing batch biofilm reactor filled with zeolite. Significant differences in nitrite production rate (NPR) were observed between different dosages of glucose. With influent COD/N ratio from 0 to 1.5, NPR declined from 0.4 to 0.05 kg/(m3·d). Meanwhile, an appropriate NO2--N/NH4+-N ratio (1.4 ± 0.5) could be obtained for simultaneous anammox denitrification at COD/N ratio of 0.5. Increasing airflow rate was found as an effective recovery strategy. Other than competition of heterotrophs with nitrifiers for dissolved oxygen, it has been verified that addition of organics generated higher free ammonia, and then further inhibitedammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) results revealed that protein-like and humic acid-like substances were the main components in extracellularpolymericsubstances (EPS). And high-throughput sequencing analysis demonstrated that the relative abundance of AOB decreased. The raw material of resin, Bisphenol A (BPA), is an endocrine-disrupting compound that can be continuously released into the environment and directly harms health. In this study, luffa sponge was used as the raw material to prepare magnetic carbon chemicals for laccase immobilization and BPA degradation. The MLC-1 was synthesized by one-step carbonization-magnetization method, which showed good magnetic properties and a strong load capacity for laccase. Compared with free laccase, Laccase@MLC-1 showed stronger thermal stability, better acid-tolerate performance and reusability. Moreover, Laccase@MLC-1 showed higher BPA degradation efficiency than free laccase. 100 mg/L of BPA can be completely removed by Laccase@MLC-1 in 4 h, while only 62.70% of BPA was removed by the same amount of free laccase. By improving reuse strategies, a complete BPA degradation ratio was obtained in each reoperation process. All results proved that Laccase@MLC-1 might be a suitable biocatalyst candidate for BPA removal. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are important components of cellular membranes, serving both structural and signaling functions. Investigation of the functional responses of cells to various PUFA often involves cell culture experiments, which can then inform or guide subsequent in vivo and clinical investigations. In this study, human carcinoma and leukemia cell lines (MCF-7, HepG2, THP-1, Jurkat) were incubated for 3 days in the presence of up to 150 μM of exogenous arachidonic or eicosapentaenoic acids. Liraglutide mw At concentrations up to 20 μM these PUFA were enriched in cellular phospholipids, but at concentrations of 20 μM or higher cells accumulated large quantities of these PUFA and their elongation products into triglycerides. This coincided with decreased cell proliferation and enhanced apoptosis. Inhibition of DGAT1 but not DGAT2 enhanced the cytotoxic effect of exogenous PUFA suggesting a protective role of PUFA sequestration into TGs. Lower (10 μM) and higher (50 μM) exogenous PUFA concentrations also had different impacts on the expression of PUFA metabolizing enzymes. Overall, these results indicate that caution must be exercised when planning in vitro experiments since elevated concentrations of PUFA can lead to dysfunctional cellular responses that are not predictive of in vivo responses to dietary PUFA. The available data suggest that abnormalities of arachidonic acid-related signaling may be of relevance in attenuated niacin-induced flush responses and lipid and glucose metabolism disturbances, which are all common among individuals with schizophrenia. We previously demonstrated attenuated skin flush responses to niacin in patients with schizophrenia. Here we investigated whether these niacin responses might be associated with elevated plasma lipid and glucose concentrations in this patient group. We found that higher plasma triglyceride levels were associated with higher total volumetric niacin response (VNR) values and that the VNR accounted for ~14.2% of the variability in triglyceride levels. Triglyceride levels were significantly higher in patients with a positive niacin skin flush response compared to those with absent niacin skin flushing at the 5-minute interval with niacin concentrations of 0.1 and 0.01 M, and at the 10- and 15-minute intervals with a niacin concentration of 0.001 M. BACKGROUND Dermatoglyphics, formed mainly during the second trimester of pregnancy have been used as markers of developmental disturbances. The aim of this study was to examine if dermatoglyphic variation in children adopted from Eastern European countries with differential prenatal alcohol exposure, could be associated with diagnosis of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). METHODS Total a-b ridge count (TABRC), total ATD angle (TATD), palpebral fissure asymmetry and fluctuating asymmetry of the a-b ridge count (FAABRC) and ATD angle (FAATD) were obtained from NO FASD (n = 40) and FASD (n = 145; FAS = 54, pFAS = 64; ARND = 13; ARBD = 14) individuals. NO FASD and FASD subgroups were statistically compared for dermatoglyphic variables. Correlations between dermatoglyphics and FASD diagnosis were also performed. RESULTS TABRC showed significantly higher values in foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS, p = 0.006) and partial FAS (pFAS, p = 0.040) groups compared to NO FASD controls. Similar results were obtained for TATD (FAS, p = 0.
