Colostrum is essential for good neonate health; however, it is not known whether different calves absorb the nutrients from colostrum equally well. In this study, the absorption of protein, IgG, and γ-glutamyl transferase was compared in newborn dairy bull calves for 1 wk after feeding colostrum from different sources. Thirty-five Holstein-Friesian bull calves were randomly allocated into 3 groups and fed colostrum within 4 h after birth. Group A calves (n = 12) were bottle fed colostrum from their own dam for 3 d. Colostrum from these group A cows was also used as foster cow colostrum for the group B calves (n = 12), such that each group A and B calf pair received identical colostrum from each milking of the respective group A dam (10% of birth weight per day). The group C calves (n = 11) were fed 1 bottle (2 L) of pooled colostrum and transition milk (referred to as pooled colostrum), as was the standard practice on the dairy farm. The pooled colostrum was collected from the other dairy cows on the farm 0 troups A and B, there was no difference in the proportion of calves in group C that failed to have passive immunity transferred adequately based on the IgG threshold ( less then 10 g/L). Thus, the calves receiving identical colostrum from the same cow had the same levels of IgG, and even the pooled colostrum provided sufficient transfer of IgG as the calves were fed within 4 h after birth.Grazing pasture is the basis for dairy production systems in regions with temperate climates, such as in Ireland, New Zealand, parts of Australia, the United States, and Europe. Milk and dairy products from cows on pasture-based farms predominantly consuming fresh grazed grass (typically classified as "grass-fed" milk) have been previously shown to possess a different nutrient profile, with potential nutritional benefits, compared with conventional milk derived from total mixed ration. Moreover, pasture-based production systems are considered more environmentally and animal welfare friendly by consumers. Eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows in mid lactation (130 ± 42 d in milk; mean ± standard deviation) were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used with main effects of corn grain endosperm type (floury or vitreous) and fineness of grind (fine or medium). Rations included alfalfa silage, corn treatments, protein supplement, minerals, and vitamins and were formulated to contain 29% starch, 27% neutral detergent fiber, 18.2% forage neutral detergent fiber, and 18% crude protein. Corn grain treatments supplied 86.2% of dietary starch. Endosperm was 25% vitreous for the floury treatment and 66% vitreous for the vitreous treatment. The floury treatment increased rate of starch degradation by 94% (19.2 vs. 9.9%/h) and decreased rate of starch passage by . 359 g/d) but did not affect apparent total-tract N digestibility. No interactions were detected for any measure of starch digestion, ruminal N metabolism, or flow of N fractions to the duodenum. Endosperm type greatly affected ruminal and total-tract starch digestibility independent of the fineness of grind of corn grain with no effects on flow of N fractions.Prosopometamorphopsia is an extremely rare disorder of visual perception characterised by facial distortions. We here review 81 cases (eight new ones and 73 cases published over the past century) to shed light on the perception of face gestalts. Our analysis indicates that the brain systems underlying the perception of face gestalts have genuine network properties, in the sense that they are widely disseminated and built such that spatially normal perception of faces can be maintained even when large parts of the network are compromised. We found that bilateral facial distortions were primarily associated with right-sided and bilateral occipital lesions, and unilateral facial distortions with lesions ipsilateral to the distorted hemifield and with the splenium of the corpus callosum. We also found tentative evidence for the involvement of the left frontal regions in the fusing of vertical hemi-images of faces, and of right parietal regions in the fusing of horizontal hemi-images. Evidence supporting the remarkable adaptability of the network comes from the relatively high recovery rates that we found, from the ipsilateral hemifield predominance of hemi-prosopometamorphopsia, and from a phenomenon called cerebral asthenopia (heightened visual fatigability) which points to the dynamic nature of compensatory mechanisms maintaining normal face perception, even in chronic cases of prosopometamorphopsia. Finally, our analysis suggests that specialised networks for the representation of face gestalts in familiar-versus-unfamiliar faces and for own-versus-other face may be present, although this is in need of further study.

Endometrial biopsies from 16 patients with heavy menstrual bleeding with a structurally normal uterus or in association with structural abnormalities identified on radiological imaging (fibroids, adenomyosis or a combination of fibroids and adenomyosis).

Participants received UPA (5 mg once daily) for three 12-week courses, each separated by 4 weeks without treatment.

Gene expression by real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, and digital image analysis were analyzed to investigate the endometrial impact of modulation of progesterone receptor pathways upon expression of steroid receptors, steroid metabolizing enzymes, cell proliferation, and progesterone-regulated genes in the same patients at 3 time points before, during, and after discontinuation of PRM treatment.

Ulipristal acetate treatment resulted in increased messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels of steroid receptors compared with pretreatment secretory endometrium; decreased mRNA levels of 17- and 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases compared with pretreatment proliferative endometrium and pretreatment secretory endometrium; reduced cell proliferation compared with pretreatment proliferative endometrium; and altered mRNA levels of progesterone-regulated genes.
