i had a lot of fire type Pokemon, in gen 1; Charmander, gen 4; chimchar, gen 5; tepig, and gen 6; fennikin.
i also had some water starters to, in gen 2 i always picked totidile, gen 3; mudkip.
i only picked a grass starter once (sorry rowlet.), of which was treeko in oras.
so i might pick litten for my love of fire types, or poblio, because he might be good against the legendarys in the game.
i remember the time i had to catch EVERY SINGLE LEGENDARY POKEMON because he was acting stupid and immediately tried to parilize it but used thunder volt on kyogre, immediately killing the poor thing, well, i had to catch pretty much every pokemon for him so he didn't kill them. yup, he's an idiot!!!
