Eight sampling location included coastal zones, touristic beaches, and rural inland areas were considered. PUF disks were fortified with surrogate standards and extracted by automated Soxhlet prior to GC-MS analysis. Σ16 PAHs ranged from 1.13 to 44.5 ng m-3 (10.3 ± 9.8), while urban locations showed up to 10 times higher PAH levels than rural or beach locations. Direct sources of PAHs, such as intensive vehicle traffic, heating, and general combustion activities, were identified. PAHs with four to six rings (46.62%) were predominantly Flt, Pyr, BbF, and BkF, and carcinogenic risk was expressed by BaP (0.10 ± 0.07 ng m-3) and BaPTEQs (0.26 ± 0.22 ng m-3). Inhalation ECR (2.23E-5, WHO) presented the lowest risk at beach locations. Molecular ratios and PCA showed a strong dominance in pyrolytic sources, such as biomass and coal combustion, with a particular signature in fires at inland locations. Overall, this study demonstrated that PUF disk passive air sampling provided a sound and simple approach for tracking air PAHs, their sources and public health risks, bringing a cost-effective tool for pollution control measures, even at small and remote towns. This is particularly relevant in extensive countries with medium or low income, such as Argentina.Phytophthora infestans is a hemibiotroph Oomycete that primarily infects tomato. In this study, the growth status and pathogenicity of attenuated and virulent strains of Phytophthora infestans were determined. Furthermore, RNA-seq technology was used to explore the differences in gene transcription levels between attenuated and virulent strains. Gene Ontology (GO) classification and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed on the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) obtained by sequencing, and the significant DEGs related to the growth and pathogenicity of the strains were screened from the significantly enriched pathways. The results revealed that compared with the virulent strain, the growth of the attenuated strain was inhibited, the structure of hyphae was destroyed, and the disease index was decreased. The differences in the growth status and disease index of the attenuated strain were related to changes in several metabolic pathways, and the DEGs in the metabolic pathways indicated alterations in the attenuated strain growth and pathogenicity. There were 2,651 DEGs in the attenuated strain, of which 1,086 were upregulated and 1,565 were downregulated. The inhibited growth of the attenuated strain was associated with accumulation of excessive glucose, decomposition of serine/glycine, and reduction of tryptophan synthesis. The reduced pathogenicity of the strain was associated with degradation of the cell wall and reduced formation of melanin and α-keto butyric acid. These results could offer insights into the mechanisms of attenuation of Phytophthora infestans. The methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme in acetogenic CO2 fixation. The MetVF-type enzyme has been purified from four different species and the physiological electron donor was hypothesized to be reduced ferredoxin. We have purified the MTHFR from Clostridium ljungdahlii to apparent homogeneity. It is a dimer consisting of two of MetVF heterodimers, has 14.9 ± 0.2 mol iron per mol enzyme, 16.2 ± 1.0 mol acid-labile sulfur per mol enzyme, and contains 1.87 mol FMN per mol dimeric heterodimer. NADH and NADPH were not used as electron donor, but reduced ferredoxin was. Based on the published electron carrier specificities for Clostridium formicoaceticum, Thermoanaerobacter kivui, Eubacterium callanderi, and Clostridium aceticum, we provide evidence using metabolic models that reduced ferredoxin cannot be the physiological electron donor in vivo, since growth by acetogenesis from H2 + CO2 has a negative ATP yield. We discuss the possible basis for the discrepancy between in vitro and in vivo functions and present a model how the MetVF-type MTHFR can be incorporated into the metabolism, leading to a positive ATP yield. This model is also applicable to acetogenesis from other substrates and proves to be feasible also to the Ech-containing acetogen T. kivui as well as to methanol metabolism in E. callanderi.Cervical cancer is recognized as a serious worldwide health problem. Despite various achievements for cervical cancer treatment, there are still shortcomings that lead to severe side effects. Combination therapy is fast becoming a key and promising treatment strategy, diminishing chemotherapy-mediated side effects. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of combined cisplatin treatment and photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the cervical cancer recovery. In this study, A2780 and A2780-CP cell lines were cultured in the Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) enriched with 10% FBS and 1% antibiotic. Both cell lines were treated with cisplatin, photodynamic light (laser with methylene blue as a photosensitizer agent), and the combination of cisplatin treatment and PDT. check details Half maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated for each treatment by the use of tetrazolium salt assay. Both cell lines were examined for cell membrane lipid peroxidation rate. Our findings showed that combination of cisplatin treatment and photodynamic therapy leads to two-fold decreased cisplatin IC50. Results showed that cisplatin and photodynamic light combination could effectively reduce A2780 and A2780-CP cell viability (p-value  less then  0.0001). Moreover, combined cisplatin and photodynamic therapy results revealed significantly increased cancer cell membrane destruction through increased lipid peroxidation, resulting in surged MDA content. Our conclusion is that combination of cisplatin and photodynamic therapy can be used as an effective and convenient treatment strategy without considerable side effects.Physical activity raises body temperature. However, the literature does not contain studies about whether the employment of hotobiomodulation (PMB) could significantly influence body temperature during a muscle fatigue (MF) protocol. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PMB on the temperature of the biceps brachii muscle during the performance of a muscle fatigue protocol. The study consisted of 14 volunteers who were divided into two groups (placebo group and laser group) and all individuals rotated into all groups (crossover study). To induce muscle fatigue, three maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) were performed for 50 s with a 50-s interval. During the MVIC, the muscle strength was assessed using surface electromyography and infrared temperature at 0, 5, 10, and 15 min after the tests. The laser group presented a less accentuated decrease in muscle strength, evidencing a lower rate of muscle fatigue (p > 0.05) in relation to the other groups. In the temperature analysis, the control group exhibited the highest average temperature, with a significant difference only for the placebo.
