Nonsense mutation or inactivation of SMARCA4 (BRG1) is associated with a monomorphic undifferentiated histological appearance in tumors at different sites. The association between SMARCA4 alteration and undifferentiated colonic carcinoma needs to be further elucidated.
A 61-year-old male patient presented to the hospital with intermittent epigastric pain in the right upper abdomen and abdominal distension. The enhanced computed tomography detected a mass in the hepatic flexure of the colon and multiple liver metastases.
The right hemicolectomy contained a 4.5-cm undifferentiated malignancy with cells arranged in sheets, abundant necrosis, and areas showing rhabdoid morphology. The immunohistochemistry result showed that these tumor cells were focally positive for cytokeratin (CK), CK8, and CK18; however, diffusely positive for vimentin, P53, Fli-1, and SALL-4. Notably, Withaferin A mw showed a heterogeneous loss of SMARCA4 expression pattern and intact SMARCB1 expression. Next-generation sequencing showed a germline SMARCA4 c.3277C>T(p.R1093*)mutation, somatic APC mutation, and no abnormal SMARCB1 gene. The tumor exhibited microsatellite stability, negative PD-L1 expression, and few infiltrating CD8 + T cells. The patient died a month later after surgery.
We presented a rare case of undifferentiated colonic neoplasm with loss of SMARCA4 protein expression and germline SMARCA4 mutation. Moreover, the role of SMARCA4 alterations in tumor diagnosis and treatment was also summarized.

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic presents challenges for surgeons of all disciplines, including cardiologists. The volume of cardiac surgery cases has to comply with the mandatory constraints of healthcare capacities. The treatment of Covid-19-positive patients must also be considered. Unfortunately, no scientific evidence is available on this issue. Therefore, this study aimed to offer some consensus-based considerations, derived from available scientific papers, regarding the organization and performance of cardiac surgery against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Key recommendations were extracted from recent literature concerning cardiac surgery. RESULTSː Reducing elective cardiac procedures should be based on frequent clinical assessment of patients on the waiting list (every one or two weeks) and the current local status of the Covid-19 pandemic. #link# Screening tests at admission for every patient are broadly recommended. Where appropriate, alternative treatment methods can be considered, including percutaneous techniques and minimally invasive surgery, if performed by experienced cardiac surgery teams.
There is little evidence on the strategies to organize cardiac surgery in the Covid-19 pandemic. Most authors agree on reducing elective operations based on patients' clinical condition and the status of the Covid-19 pandemic. Admission screenings and the use of percutaneous or minimally invasive approaches should be preferred to reduce in-hospital stays.

As LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure) is being increasingly used for the diagnosis and treatment of uterine cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, surgical smoke during LEEP has become an inevitable health issue. Therefore, in this study, exposure to the chemical substances in surgical smoke produced during LEEP was assessed.
Smoke samples from patients with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia undergoing LEEP were collected by smoke-absorbing devices situated 1 m away from the operating table and near the nose of the operator during LEEP. Each plume sample was collected after 5 patients underwent LEEP, requiring 5 min for smoke collection for each patient. The chemicals of exposure to surgical smoke were assessed, and the hazard classes of these chemical components were evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Qualitative analysis of the smoke produced during LEEP revealed a variety of potentially toxic chemicals under standard detection, such as benzene, toluene,e exposure limits when local exhaust ventilation procedures were efficiently used. However, the concentrations of carbon dioxide and formaldehyde found in smoke were significantly higher after surgery. Wearing a high-filtration mask and using evacuation devices routinely and consistently when performing LEEP are recommended to protect perioperative personnel.
After ovarian tissue transplantation, ischemia-reperfusion injury and free radicals cause follicle depletion and apoptosis. Therefore, the use of antioxidants to reduce the production of free radicals is an important method to address the consequences of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Resveratrol is a natural active polyphenol compound with anti-inflammatory, antitumor, strong antioxidant and anti-free radical properties. The aim of this study was to investigate whether resveratrol could improve the effect of autologous ovarian transplantation after cryopreserve-thawn mouse ovarian tissue.
Whole-ovary vitrification and autotransplantation models were used to investigate the effects of resveratrol. Six-week-old female mice from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) were subjected to vitrification. All ovaries were preserved in liquid nitrogen for 1 week before being thawed. After thawing, ovarian tissues were autotransplanted in the bilateral kidney capsules. Mice (n = 72) were randomly divided into four grmmatory and antioxidative mechanisms.
Administration of resveratrol could improve the quality of cryopreserved mouse ovarian tissue after transplantation and the embryo outcome, through anti-inflammatory and antioxidative mechanisms.
