- Komet nonperiodik: komet yang hanya ditemukan sekali, diperkirakan karena komet tersebut memiliki orbit yang sangat panjang dan periodenya sangat lama untuk melewati satu putaran.
Contoh: komet Arend-Roland, komet Brooks, komet Ikeya-Seki, komet Lulin, dan komet Kohoutek.
- Komet periodik: ada sekitar 150 jumlah komet periodik/komet periode pendek yang didaftarkan oleh astronom. Komet ini memiliki periode revolusi mengelilingi Matahari hanya beberapa tahun atau puluh tahun hingga 200 tahun. Mereka bersinar secara periodik di langit setiap kali komet ada di dekat Matahari. Komet ini dapat dilihat beberapa kali melintasi Bumi, rata-rata memiliki jarak orbit yang lebih pendek, sehingga untuk kembali pada satu titik yang sama bisa ditempuh dalam waktu lebih cepat.
Contoh: komet Halley (dengan 30 pelintasan perihelion berurutan yang tercatat sejak 240 SM.), komet Hartley, komet Kopff, dan komet Encke.
