To assess the performance of the Danish first trimester screening program in twin pregnancies.

Retrospective, nation-wide, cohort study with data collected from the Danish Fetal Medicine Database (DFMD) and The Danish Central Cytogenetic Registry (DCCR). The cohort included all women with twin pregnancies participating in the national first trimester screening program for Trisomy 21. Risk assessment was based on maternal age, nuchal translucency (NT) thickness and, if available, biochemical markers (β-hCG and PAPP-A).

8812 twin pregnancies including 42 pregnancies with Trisomy 21 had a risk assessment between 2009 and 2017. The detection rate (DR) for pregnancies with a risk assessment based on maternal age and NT only (missing data on biochemical markers, n = 4693) was 69.6% (95% CI 50.8%-88.4%) for a 6.3% false positive rate (FPR) (95% CI 5.6%-7.0%), whereas for pregnancies with a risk assessment based on all three parameters (n = 4119) the DR was 89.5% (95% CI 76.7%-100.0%) for a 7.2% FPR (95% CI 6.4%-8.0%).

Although phylogenetic hypotheses are available, the molecular and morphological diversity and species boundaries within the genus remain unexplored. In this study, the authors generated mitochondrial data for 90 specimens combined with morphometric and meristic data to investigate species diversity, species boundaries and putative morphological signatures in Kronichthys. Phylogenetic and species delimitation results clearly show the presence of four genetic lineages, three within Kronichthys heylandi along the coast from Rio de Janeiro to southern São Paulo and a single lineage encompassing both the nominal species Kronichthys lacerta and Kronichthys subteres from the Ribeira de Iguape basin to Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Nonetheless, morphological data show overlapped ranges in morphometrics and a definition of only two morphotypes, with clear phenotypic differences in the teeth number K. heylandi differs from K. subteres + K. lacerta by the higher number of premaxillary teeth (30-52 vs. 19-28) and higher number of dentary teeth (28-54 vs. 17-28). Headwater captures and connections of paleodrainages because of sea-level fluctuations represent the two major biogeographic processes promoting species diversification and lineage dispersal of Kronichthys in the Atlantic coastal range of Brazil.
Leucine-rich alpha-2 glycoprotein (LRG) is a novel acute phase protein involved in inflammation-associated diseases and that considered to be induced by multiple proinflammatory cytokines. This study aimed to investigate gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum levels of LRG, interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in patients with Stage 3 periodontitis before and after non-surgical periodontal treatment.

Twenty-five Stage 3 periodontitis and twenty-five periodontally healthy individuals were enrolled in the study. Clinical periodontal measurements were recorded; periodontitis patients received non-surgical periodontal treatment, and GCF and serum samples were obtained at baseline and at 6weeks after treatment. LRG, IL-6 and TNF-α were determined by ELISA.

GCF and serum LRG, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly higher in periodontitis group than healthy controls (P<.001). A significant decrease in GCF and serum LRG, IL-6 and TNF-α was detected after periodontal treatment compared with baseline values of periodontitis patients (P<.001).

Our findings revealed that LRG expression was increased in Stage 3 periodontitis both locally and systemically, and non-surgical periodontal therapy was effective in reducing LRG levels in GCF and serum of these patients.
