It could be shown that the effect of sodium selenite on radiation response is strongly dependent on the respective experimental in vitro conditions and ranges from lead to an initially suspected but ultimately no real radioprotection to radiosensitizing up to no effect in one and the same cell line. This might be a reason for controversially described cell responses to radiation under the influence of sodium selenite in studies so far.Over the last few decades, females have significantly increased their participation in athletic competitions and occupations (e.g. BMS-754807 price military, firefighters) in hot and thermally challenging environments. Heat acclimation, which involves repeated passive or active heat exposures that lead to physiological adaptations, is a tool commonly used to optimize performance in the heat. However, the scientific community's understanding of adaptations to heat acclimation are largely based on male data, complicating the generalizability to female populations. Though limited, current evidence suggests that females may require a greater number of heat acclimation sessions or greater thermal stress to achieve the same magnitude of physiological adaptations as males. The underlying mechanisms explaining the temporal sex differences in the physiological adaptations to heat acclimation are currently unclear. Therefore, the aims of this state-of-the-art review are to (i) present a brief yet comprehensive synthesis of the current female and sex difference literature, (ii) highlight sex-dependent (e.g. anthropometric, menstrual cycle) and sex-independent factors (e.g. environmental conditions, fitness) influencing the physiological and performance adaptations to heat acclimation, and (iii) address key avenues for future research.
To evaluate the construct validity of Psychomotor Vigilance Test performance for measuring fatigue in people with acquired brain injury.

Observational cross-sectional study.

Fifty-four people with acquired brain injury and 61 healthy controls.

Participants performed the Psychomotor Vigilance Test and reported momentary fatigue before and after this test and general fatigue. Associations between performance and fatigue in patients were tested by correlational and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses, controlling for sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and mood.

Patients performed worse on the test compared with controls. Within the patient group, worse test performance was associated with increases in momentary post-test fatigue and general fatigue, indicating convergent validity, but also with daytime sleepiness, and mood complaints, indicating a lack of divergent validity. When controlling for sleepiness and mood, the association between performance and general fatigue was no longer significant, whereas the association between performance and post-test fatigue remained.

Performance on the Psychomotor Vigilance Test cannot be used as a specific measure for fatigue, but it appears to be a more general measure of severity of symptoms including fatigue, mood, and sleepiness. Therefore, the Psychomotor Vigilance Test may be a useful measure to examine the effects of interventions aimed at reducing these symptoms.

The natriuretic peptide receptor 2 gene (NPR2) is a causative gene of idiopathic short stature (ISS) with an incidence rate of 2% to 6%. The clinical characteristics of patients with NPR2 heterozygous mutations are atypical, and data on the efficacy of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment in patients with NPR2 mutations are limited.

This work reports 6 cases with NPR2 mutation and explores the characteristics of patients with an NPR2 mutation and their therapeutic response to rhGH.

Six Chinese short-stature patients in our hospital with NPR2 mutations by whole-exome sequencing were included. We also searched all previously published NPR2 mutation cases as of August 10, 2020, and information about their medical history, mutations, and rhGH treatment were recorded and summarized.

The clinical characteristics of patients with an NPR2 heterozygous mutation mainly included short stature, facial anomalies, and skeletal dysplasia. Skeletal dysplasia mainly included brachydactyly (56.2%), shortened metacarpals or metatarsals (particularly fourth to fifth; 26.1%), and clinodactyly (21.7%). rhGH treatment significantly improved the height SD score (SDS) of patients with NPR2 heterozygous mutations (median, -2.1 vs -2.9, P < .001), especially in girls. The height SDS change correlated negatively with initial age of treatment (r = -0.477; P = .034), and height SDS change of patients with NPR2 heterozygous mutations in the carboxyl-terminal guanylyl cyclase catalytic domain was significantly higher than that of the extracellular ligand-binding region domain (median, 1.9 vs 0.6, P = .019).

ISS patients with skeletal deformities should be tested for an NPR2 mutation. rhGH treatment is beneficial for short-stature patients with NPR2 heterozygous mutations and needs further study.

The ovine cheese industry would benefit from an improvement, through genetic selection, of traits related to the milk coagulation properties (MCPs) and cheese yield-related traits, broadly denoted as "cheese-making traits." Considering that routine measurements of these traits needed for genetic selection are expensive and time-consuming, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a cheese-making phenotype imputation method based on the information from official milk control records combined with the pH of the milk. For this study, we analyzed records of milk production traits, milk composition traits, and measurements of cheese-making traits available from a total of 1,145 dairy ewes of the Spanish Assaf sheep breed. Cheese-making traits included five related to the MCPs and two cheese yield-related traits. The milk and cheese-making phenotypes were adjusted for significant effects based on a general linear model. The adjusted phenotypes were used to define a multiple-phenotype imputation procedure for the cheese-making traits based on multivariate normality and Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling.
