The effects of saturated fat on cardiovascular health have been studied for more than half a century. While simple public health messages have been to avoid and/or limit their intake, the underlying research is more complex. It is apparent that the effects of saturated fat on health are dependent both on the presence of other nutrients as well as the associated dietary pattern. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to develop and validate a percentage body fat (%BF) prediction equation using SFT for Sri Lankan adults. METHODS Healthy adults (≥18 years) were randomly selected and SFT was measured in five areas (triceps, biceps, calf, suprailliac and subscapular). Body composition analysis was evaluated by Deuterium oxide (D2O) dilution. Prediction equation for %BF was derived by linear-regression-analysis. RESULTS Study population included 170 adults (Males 32.9%; age 43.2 ± 12.6 years). Final equation for %BF (r = 0.715, p less then 0.001) correlated significantly D2O dilution derived %BF. CONCLUSIONS The equation is suitable for estimation of %BF in Sri Lankan adults and is possibly appropriate for other South-Asian populations. BACKGROUND AND AIMS Hypertension and diabetes are global health problems with an incidence that is rapidly increasing worldwide. Depression is the most frequent mental health co-morbidity and is considered an important risk factor for the development of both diseases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with depression among Peruvian adults with hypertension and diabetes. METHODS We performed a secondary analysis of the 2017 Peru Demographic and Family Health Survey, using data from 10,566 adults aged 40 and older. The main outcome was depression assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Other important variables were the diagnosis of hypertension or diabetes, sex, age, level of education, geographical region, wealth index, daily smoking, harmful alcohol consumption and physical disability. RESULTS The overall prevalence of depression was 23.15% (CI 95% 21.42%-24.88%) and among adults with hypertension and diabetes it was 34.96% (CI 95% 29.33%-40.59%) and 35.56% (CI 95% 24.49%-46.63%), respectively. Whereas the prevalence of depression among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was higher in the physical disability group (PRa 1.28; CI 95% 1.12-1.45), the prevalence of depression among adults with hypertension was higher in the female group (PRa 1.36; CI 95% 1.20-1.54) and among those with harmful alcohol consumption (PRa 1.50; CI 95% 1.01-2.24). CONCLUSION Peru has a considerable burden of depression in the hypertensive and diabetic populations. While the variables positively associated with depression in hypertensive adults were female gender and harmful alcohol consumption, in adults with diabetes it was the presence of physical disability. This study showed that there is a positive correlation between serum Visceral Adipose tissue derived Serine Protease Inhibitor (VASPIN) level and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In previous studies, this relation was attributed to the generalization of higher amount of adipose tissue in patients with PCOS. However, we detected that VASPIN is significantly high in patients with PCOS regardless of BMI. Besides, the metabolic parameters such as fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides and LDL-C levels were also increased in lean women with PCOS. This review highlights emerging data that support nuclear architecture as an intrinsic regulator of GSC maintenance and germ cell differentiation. Here, we focus on the nuclear lamina (NL) and the nucleolus, two compartments that undergo alterations in composition upon germ cell differentiation. Loss of NL or nucleolar components leads to GSC loss, resulting from activation of GSC quality control checkpoint pathways. We suggest that the NL and nucleolus integrate signals needed for the switch between GSC maintenance and germ cell differentiation, and propose regulation of nuclear actin pools as one mechanism that connects these compartments. The Drosophila female ovary is an excellent model for investigating how multiple stem cell types are coordinately regulated in vivo. The ovary contains at least two stem cell types, germline stem cells (GSCs) and somatic follicular stem cells (FSCs). Although GSCs and FSCs are maintained within a distinct extra-cellular microenvironment, known as a niche, they share some common signaling molecules to generate their own niche. To properly maintain these stem cell types, understanding how signaling molecules are regulated is essential. In this review, we summarize the recent understanding of the mechanisms maintaining GSCs and FSCs from the perspective of growth factor regulation and discuss how these regulatory mechanisms contribute to stem cell maintenance, competition, and survival.
