Leigh syndrome (LS) is a serious genetic disease that can be caused by mutations in dozens of different genes.
Clinical study of a deafness pedigree in which some members developed LS. Cellular, biochemical and molecular genetic analyses of patients' tissues and cybrid cell lines were performed.
mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) m.1555A>G/
and m.9541T>C/
mutations were found. The first one is a well-known pathologic mutation. However, the second one does not appear to contribute to the high hearing loss penetrance and LS phenotype observed in this family.
The m.1555A>G pathological mutation, accompanied with an unknown nuclear DNA (nDNA) factor, could be the cause of the phenotypic manifestations in this pedigree.

We aim to assess the temporal trend of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening uptake according to the year of screening implementation in each region and to identify predictors for the uptake of CRC screening. Methods A cross-sectional study with 12,657 participants from the Spanish National Health Surveys 2011 and 2017 was used. Uptake rates were analyzed according to the date that the screening program was implemented. Results For regions with programs implemented before 2011, the uptake rate increased 3.34-fold from 2011 to 2017 (9.8% vs. TAK-875 mouse 32.7%; p less then 0.001). For regions that implemented screening within the 2011-2016 period, the uptake rose from 4.3% to 13.2% (3.07-fold; p less then 0.001), and for regions that implemented screening after 2016, the uptake increased from 3.4% to 8.8% (2.59-fold; p less then 0.001). For the entire Spanish population, the uptake increased 3.21-fold (6.8% vs. 21.8%; p less then 0.001). Positive predictors for uptake were older age, Spanish nationality, middle-to-high educational level, suffering chronic diseases, non-smoking and living in regions where screening programs were implemented earlier. Conclusions The different periods for the implementation of CRC screening as well as sociodemographic and health inequalities may have limited the improvement in the screening uptake from 2011 to 2017 in Spain.A problem of estimating the movement and orientation of a mobile robot is examined in this paper. The strapdown inertial navigation systems are often engaged to solve this common obstacle. The most important and critically sensitive component of such positioning approximation system is a gyroscope. Thus, we analyze here the random error components of the gyroscope, such as bias instability and random rate walk, as well as those that cause the presence of white and exponentially correlated (Markov) noise and perform an optimization of these parameters. The MEMS gyroscopes of InvenSense MPU-6050 type for each axis of the gyroscope with a sampling frequency of 70 Hz are investigated, as a result, Allan variance graphs and the values of bias instability coefficient and angle random walk for each axis are determined. It was found that in the output signals of the gyroscopes there is no Markov noise and random rate walk, and the X and Z axes are noisier than the Y axis. In the process of inertial measurement unit (IMU) calibration, the correction coefficients are calculated, which allow partial compensating the influence of destabilizing factors and determining the perpendicularity inaccuracy for sensitivity axes, and the conversion coefficients for each axis, which transform the sensor source codes into the measure unit and bias for each axis. The output signals of the calibrated gyroscope are noisy and offset from zero to all axes, so processing accelerometer and gyroscope data by the alpha-beta filter or Kalman filter is required to reduce noise influence.Nanocatalysts, more precisely solids nanomaterials with catalytic properties to be used as heterogeneous catalysts, are an extended and very diverse group of nanostructured materials representing, at present, an active area of research with application in many catalyzed processes [...].This mini-review aims to discuss the development and applications of mass spectrometry (MS)-based hybrid approaches in metabolomics. Several recently developed hybrid approaches are introduced. Then, the overall workflow, frequently used instruments, data handling strategies, and applications are compared and their pros and cons are summarized. Overall, the improved repeatability and quantitative capability in large-scale MS-based metabolomics studies are demonstrated, in comparison to either targeted or untargeted metabolomics approaches alone. In summary, we expect this review to serve as a first attempt to highlight the development and applications of emerging hybrid approaches in metabolomics, and we believe that hybrid metabolomics approaches could have great potential in many future studies. The indoleamine compound melatonin has been extensively studied in the regulation of the circadian rhythm in nearly all vertebrates. The effects of melatonin have also been studied in Protozoan parasites, especially in the synchronization of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum via a complex downstream signalling pathway. Melatonin activates protein kinase A (PfPKA) and requires the activation of protein kinase 7 (PfPK7), PLC-IP3, and a subset of genes from the ubiquitin-proteasome system. In other parasites, such as Trypanosoma cruzi and Toxoplasma gondii, melatonin increases inflammatory components, thus amplifying the protective response of the host's immune system and affecting parasite load. The development of melatonin-related indole compounds exhibiting antiparasitic properties clearly suggests this new and effective approach as an alternative treatment. Therefore, it is critical to understand how melatonin confers stimulatory functions in host-parasite biology. The objectives of this study were to identify nursery cohorts with an active Salmonella infection using combined serological and bacteriological methods, and to try to identify risk factors associated with swine nurseries with active Salmonella spread. Twenty pigs from each of 50 cohorts of weaned pigs from 44 different nursery barns were sampled about the time of weaning and near the end of the nursery stage. Information regarding farm management and biosecurity practices were collected using a questionnaire. Blood samples were obtained at both visits, while rectal swabs were collected at the second visit. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to test sera for Salmonella antibodies and rectal samples were cultured for Salmonella. A nursery cohort was identified as having an active Salmonella infection if Salmonella was cultured from one or more of the 20 pigs or if serological evidence suggested exposure to Salmonella. The association between farm-level management covariates and active Salmonella infection was assessed in 46 cohorts using a logistic regression model.
