INTRODUCTION Methanethiol is a highly toxic chemical present in crude oil and natural gas. At high concentrations, methanethiol causes metabolic acidosis, seizures, myocardial infarction, coma, and death. Occupational Health and Safety Administration lists methanethiol as a potential terrorist weapon. Methanethiol blocks the electron transport chain, resulting in lactic acidosis and acidemia. There is no specific treatment for methanethiol. Our objective was to measure the efficacy of intravenous (IV) hydroxocobalamin (HOC) versus no treatment (control) in methanethiol-induced apnea in a swine model. METHODS Sixteen anesthetized swine received IV sodium methanethiolate to apnea and were randomized to receive either IV HOC or no treatment. Physiologic and laboratory parameters were monitored throughout the study. Power analysis indicated that 8 animals per group would be sufficient to find a moderate effect (f = 0.24) with 2 groups, α = 0.05, and 80% power. RESULTS Both groups were similar in baseline characteristics. Following treatment, the HOC group had significantly higher heart rate and blood pressure at 5-10 minutes post-apnea, higher systemic vascular resistance at 5 minutes post-apnea, higher tidal volume, higher end-tidal carbon dioxide, and lower end-tidal oxygen 10-15 minutes post-apnea compared with controls. None of the animals survived to the end of the study (60 minutes). The Kaplan-Meier survival curves were significantly different between cohorts (log-rank p = 0.0321), with the HOC group surviving longer than controls (32.4 ± 7.3 vs. 25.8 ± 1.0 minutes). CONCLUSIONS In our model of intravenous methanethiolate poisoning, IV HOC administration resulted in a transient improvement in vital signs and prolonged time to death; however, it did not improve survival.Bac Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and most commonly develops as a result of atherosclerosis. ANGPTL8 is a secreted adipokine that regulates lipid metabolism and is associated with cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes and CAD. However, the association between circulating ANGPTL8 levels and CAD is inconsistent among studies and the mechanism by which ANGPTL8 contributes to CAD development remains poorly understood. Concentrations of ANGPTL8, adiponectin, TNF-α, IL6, hsCRP, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 were measured by ELISA in serum samples from 192 CAD patients diagnosed with stenosis > 50% in at least one coronary artery by angiography and 71 individuals with normal heart function. Serum ANGPTL8 levels were significantly higher in CAD patients compared to controls (83.84 ± 23.25 ng/mL vs. 50.45 ± 17.73; p less then 0.001), independent of adjustment for age, sex, BMI, smoking and statin use. ANGPTL8 could also differentiate CAD patients from controls with 82.3% specificity and 81.4% sensitivity (p less then 0.001). Adiponectin levels were lower in CAD patients, while ICAM-1, VCAM-1, TNF-α, IL6, and hsCRP levels were higher compared to non-CAD controls (all p less then 0.001). ANGPTL8 levels were associated with BMI in controls and with BMI, TG, and ICAM-1 in CAD patients. The presence of elevated ANGPTL8 levels in CAD patients and independent association with TG and ICAM-1 suggest a possible role related to endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.Congenital heart diseases have varied presentations depending on the age of presentation. Some novel epitopes hidden in the hemagglutinin (HA) trimeric interface have been discovered recently, and a number of antibodies targeting these epitopes have been found to be capable of neutralizing a broad range of influenza isolates. These findings may have important implications for the development of universal influenza vaccines and antiviral drugs. In this review, we focused on the antibodies targeting these newly discovered epitopes in the HA domain of the influenza virus to promote the development of universal anti-influenza antibodies or vaccines and extend the discovery to other viruses with similar conformational changes in envelope proteins.The grey water footprint (GWF) can be used to connect wastewater quality and quantity, making it a powerful tool for policy makers and those responsible for managing wastewater systems. As a supplementary to existing GWF research, this study explores the GWF evolution of eight economic regions in China by taking into consideration the GWF of livestock feeding. In addition, we use the logarithmic mean division index method to study the background driving forces of GWF in primary industry for eight economic regions. Results show that the overall GWF in China fluctuates from 6082 billion m3 to 6238 billion m3 between the years 2003 and 2015. Primary industry contributes most to the GWF because of livestock feeding, particularly for the northwest economic region, accounting for 84.81% in 2015. The southwest economic region has the highest total GWF, and east coast region has the lowest total GWF. An analysis of driving forces shows that economic scale and industrial structure are the driving forces that best explain the GWF for the East coast, middle of Yellow River, Northwest, and Southwest economic regions.
