Almost 20% of women will suffer from sexual abuse at some point in their lives. This is a known risk factor for developing chronic pelvic pain (CPP), which is a major health problem worldwide. We conducted a pilot study in a Gynecology Outpatient Clinic to find the correlation between these two clinical entities and provide better evidence for their diagnosis and treatment.

A semi-structured interview for the evaluation of sexual violence in women (EVS) was used as a screening tool and a complement to routine gynecological examination to identify patients suffering from sexual abuse. Patients included were also assessed for comorbidities, including CPP, and other coexisting mental health problems.

Of the 61 patients screened, 33 (54.1%) had pelvic pain. Also, 11 patients (18%) had suffered sexual abuse at some point in their lives, which was only disclosed when the specific interview was performed. Ten patients (90.8%) out of 11 that had been sexually abused also had pelvic pain. This was found to be statistically significant in this sample (p = 0.008) with a more than 11-fold greater risk of having pelvic pain (OR, 11.7; 95% CI, 1.4-98.7). Most patients did not have psychological violence (77%) but those that did (23%) had a seven-fold greater risk of having pelvic pain (OR, 7.4; 95% CI, 1.5-36.9).

Whether such mechanism can induce lysosomal biogenesis in vivo is unknown. In this study, we addressed the question whether prolonged treatment with sunitinib (SUN) in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (n = 22) and with imatinib (IM) in those with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (n = 6) could induce lysosomal biogenesis in leukocytes. Lysosomal biogenesis was monitored using immunoblotting of three lysosomal membrane proteins lysosome-associated membrane proteins 1 and 2 (LAMP1 and LAMP2) and vacuolar H+-ATPase, B2 subunit (ATP6V1B2). Present results indicate that prolonged treatment with SUN affects LAMP1 and LAMP2 expression only marginally in most patients. In contrast, changes in ATP6V1B2 expression were marked and resembled irregular oscillations. Very similar changes in the expression of lysosomal membrane proteins were also found in IM-treated patients. Conclusion prolonged treatment of cancer patients with SUN and IM did not induce leucocyte lysosomal biogenesis but dramatically affected expression of ATP6V1B2.
The value of morphology as a sperm parameter remains uncertain. Many studies have addressed the importance of morphology to predict the success of intrauterine insemination (IUI), but with conflicting results.

The aims of this study were to review the current literature, to query our own clinical experience via a retrospective, descriptive study, and to determine whether the diagnosis of isolated teratozoospermia influences pregnancy rate after IUI.

We identified a large number of studies addressing this question. All were retrospective and most used different criteria to assess sperm morphology. Further complicating matters, the cutoff for normal morphology decreased from 15% to 4%. In our patient population, we found 12 cases of isolated teratozoospermia (10.43%). Only one of these produced an ongoing pregnancy and live birth. In all other cases, alteration of other sperm parameters coexisted (89.57%). These cycles produced a pregnancy rate of 13%, a nonsignficant difference. Pregnancy rates also were analyzed according to the percentage of normal morphology 35.
