Serum microRNA has been demonstrated as a noninvasive predictor for the progression of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The role of microRNA-486-5p (miR-486-5p) in NSCLC seems to be paradoxical. On the one hand, elevated expression of miR-486-5p in serum is associated with unfavorable survival; on the other hand, miR-486-5p was notably reduced in NSCLC tissues and acted as a tumor-suppressor to inhibit NSCLC metastasis. The expression of miR-486-5p was analyzed in serum and tissue samples and their relationship was explored. The miR-486-5p-expressing cells were isolated by fluorescent-activated cell sorting. The downstream target of miR-486-5p was identified by bioinformatics prediction and experimental confirmation. Functional studies of miR-486-5p on NSCLC metastasis were determined by endothelial permeability assay and trans-endothelial invasion assay. We found that the expression of miR-486-5p was remarkably increased in serum, while dramatically downregulated in tumor tissues of NSCLC. However, the level of miR-486-5p in serum was positively correlated with that in tumor tissues. Next, we identified CD31+ vascular endothelial cells in the lung stroma as miR-486-5p-expressing cells. According to bioinformatics prediction, quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR, luciferase reporter assay, and western blot, miR-486-5p directly targeted the cell adhesion molecule 1/tight junctions axis in vascular endothelial cells. In addition, endothelial permeability assay and trans-endothelial invasion assay confirmed that miR-486-5p promoted NSCLC metastasis. Highly elevated expression of miR-486-5p in CD31+ vascular endothelial cells increased vascular permeability and promoted NSCLC metastasis. In conclusion, stromal-derived miR-486-5p is responsible for the paradoxical effect of miR-486-5p in serum and tumor tissue.Phycisphaera-like WD2101 'soil group' is one of the as-yet-uncultivated phylogenetic clades within the phylum Planctomycetes. Members of this clade are commonly detected in various terrestrial habitats. This study shows that WD2101 represented one of the major planctomycete groups in 10 boreal peatlands, comprising up to 76% and 36% of all Planctomycetes-affiliated 16S rRNA gene reads in raised bogs and eutrophic fens respectively. These types of peatlands displayed clearly distinct intra-group diversity of WD2101-affiliated planctomycetes. The first isolate of this enigmatic planctomycete group, strain M1803, was obtained from a humic lake surrounded by Sphagnum peat bogs. Strain M1803 displayed 89.2% 16S rRNA gene similarity to Tepidisphaera mucosa and was represented by motile cocci that divided by binary fission and grew under micro-oxic conditions. Selleckchem PF-06650833 The complete 7.19 Mb genome of strain M1803 contained an array of genes encoding Planctomycetal type bacterial microcompartment organelle likely involved in l-rhamnose metabolism, suggesting participation of M1803-like planctomycetes in polysaccharide degradation in peatlands. The corresponding cellular microcompartments were revealed in ultrathin cell sections. Strain M1803 was classified as a novel genus and species, Humisphaera borealis gen. nov., sp. nov., affiliated with the formerly recognized WD2101 'soil group'.
To assess the prevalence of neurodevelopmental problems in adolescents with severe obesity and their associations with binge eating and depression.
Data were collected at inclusion in a randomised study of bariatric surgery in 48 adolescents (73% girls; mean age 15.7±1.0years; mean body mass index 42.6±5.2kg/m
). Parents completed questionnaires assessing their adolescents' symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder and reported earlier diagnoses. Patients answered self-report questionnaires on binge eating and depressive symptoms.
The parents of 26/48 adolescents (54%) reported scores above cut-off for symptoms of the targeted disorders in their adolescents, but only 15% reported a diagnosis, 32% of adolescents reported binge eating, and 20% reported symptoms of clinical depression. No significant associations were found between neurodevelopmental problems and binge eating or depressive symptoms. Only a third of the adolescents reported no problems in either area.
Two thirds of adolescents seeking surgical weight loss presented with substantial mental health problems (reported by themselves or their parents). This illustrates the importance of a multi-professional approach and the need to screen for and treat mental health disorders in adolescents with obesity.

Induction of apoptosis, inflammation, and autophagy following dysregulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway contributes to the cardiac damage induced by these drugs. Several natural compounds (NCs), including ferulic acid, gingerol, salvianolic acid B, paeonol, apigenin, calycosin, rutin, neferine, higenamine, vincristine, micheliolide, astragaloside IV, and astragalus polysaccharide, have been reported to suppress cytotoxic drug-induced cardiac injury. This article reviews these NCs that have been reported to have a protective effect against cytotoxic drug-induced cardiotoxicity through regulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.Acorns, the fruit of the oak, have long been an important source of food in different cultures around the world. Despite their long culinary tradition, they have become under-appreciated. Due to their high starch content, acorns are mainly used for flour production, and acorn flour is considered as a replacement for cereal flour in a wide range of applications in food production. This study reviewed the published literature concerning acorn flour production and composition as well as the possibility of using acorn flour in the most popular flour-based products such as bread, cake, and cookies. The study also presents the advantages resulting from acorn flour incorporation to the human diet and acorn flour influence on the quality of bread and pastry products. This review found that acorn flour is characterized by a lack of gluten proteins and a high content of fiber and minerals as well as the presence of polyphenols with antioxidant properties. However, negative impact of its larger amount on the dough rheological features and product physical properties has been emphasized in many studies.
