Furthermore, our data help clarify some controversy concerning the presence and/or origin of structures related to the snake basicranium and braincase roof. For example, our detailed description of supraoccipital development suggests that this bone derived, at least in part, from the tectum posterius, although the involvement of the tectum synoticum cannot be totally excluded. Similarly, the epiotic centers of supraoccipital ossification are confirmed during braincase development, and the ancestral lacrimal bone primordium is observed as a ventral element at the early stages of prefrontal development. Finally, our embryonic C. cerastes data highlight a plausible asymmetry in snake skull development, mostly occurring in the basicranium region, but further investigations of embryonic samples and viper species would be required to confirm such phenomenon. © 2020 Anatomical Society.OBJECTIVES Recent efforts have been made to develop 10 personality disorder spectra scales using items from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF). These scales, developed by Sellbom et al. (2018, J. Pers. Assess., 1-15), demonstrated good validity and warranted cross-validation. METHOD In all, 97 veterans undergoing neuropsychological evaluation in a VA outpatient clinic completed the MMPI-2-RF and the MCMI-III. We examined the psychometric properties of the scales and proposed additional scales based on personality constructs found in other established tests and prior versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM; APA, 2013). RESULTS The 10 original and three additional scales demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties. Most of the 13 scales correlated strongly with the corresponding MCMI-III scale, however, DSM criteria coverage was variable between scales. CONCLUSION These data provide additional support for 10 personality disorder spectra scales based on MMPI-2-RF items and establish preliminary evidence for three additional scales. Further validation is needed in larger and diverse samples. Published 2020. Their compromise can lead to mitral valve dysfunction, associated with morbidity and mortality. Therefore, a review on the morphometry of the mitral valve is crucial, more specifically on the importance of valve dimensions and shape for its function. This review initially provides a brief background on the anatomy and physiology of the mitral valve, followed by an analysis of the morphological information available. A characterisation of mathematical descriptions of several parts of the valve is performed and the impact of different dimensions and shape changes in disease is then outlined. Finally, a section regarding future directions and recommendations for the use of morphometric information in clinical analysis of the mitral valve is presented. © 2020 Anatomical Society. The placental microvasculature is a conduit for fetal blood allowing solute exchange between the mother and the fetus. Serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF SEM) allows ultrastructure to be viewed in three dimensions and provides a new perspective on placental anatomy. This study used SBF SEM to study endothelial cells within the human placental microvasculature from uncomplicated pregnancies. Term human placental villi were aldehyde-fixed and processed for imaging by SBF SEM. Manual segmentation was carried out on a terminal villous capillary and an intermediate villous arteriole and venule. Twenty-seven SBF SEM stacks from terminal villi were analysed using stereological approaches to determine the volumes of microvascular components and the proportions of pericyte coverage. SBF SEM analysis of capillary endothelial cells revealed the presence of interendothelial protrusions (IEPs) originating from the donor cell at the endothelial junction and forming deep thin projections up to 7 μm into theey & Sons Ltd on behalf of Anatomical Society.BACKGROUND Jiuqu are vital saccharifying and fermenting agents for Chinese fermented foods. Natural ventilation during Jiuqu fermentation causes changes in temperature, oxygen and moisture content, resulting in mass and heat gradients from the outer to inner areas of Jiuqu blocks. In the present study, microbiota stratification in Jiuqu was investigated by single molecule real-time sequencing and culture isolation. The contributors of Bacillus to amylase activity of Jiuqu and the dynamics of their biomass during Jiuqu fermentation were also analyzed. RESULTS The dominant orders, genera and species between the inner and outer layers of Huangjiu qu (HJQ) were similar, although they displayed greater variance in two layers of Baijiu qu (BJQ). Bacillus possessed the highest diversity (including 27 species) in Jiuqu. Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus altitudinis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus megaterium were most prevalent in HJQ, whereas B. licheniformis, B. amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus cereus were dominant in BJQ. Isolates of B. amyloliquefaciens, B. selleck inhibitor subtilis and B. cereus exhibited high activities of amylase and glucoamylase. Quantification of Bacillus members possessing genes of α-amylase revealed that B. cereus and B. licheniformis were the most dominant microbes to secret α-amylase in Jiuqu and their biomass were increasing during Jiuqu fermentation. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates the microbial distribution in different layers of Jiuqu and clarifies the Bacillus species processing the activity of α-amylase. These results will help industries control the quality of Jiuqu by rationally selecting starters and optimizing their microbiota. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.OBJECTIVES To identify trends and determinants of drinking water practices [bottled (BW) versus community water (CW) consumption] among families of pediatric patients presenting to an academic dental institution over 15 years. METHODS Electronic health record data were obtained for all first-time routine-care patients ages 0-16 presenting to UNC-Chapel Hill's Pediatric Dentistry Clinics from 2002 to 2016, including families' primary drinking water source and patient demographics (e.g., age, gender, residence, insurance status). Data analyses included descriptive and bivariate methods and multivariable modeling using a P less then 0.05 statistical significance criterion. RESULTS BW consumption has increased over time, from 17 percent in 2004 to 42 percent in 2016 (n = 2,920; P less then 0.05). Medicaid-enrolled children [prevalence ratio (PR) = 2.1; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.8-2.4] and residents of rural counties (PR = 1.3, 95% CI = 1.1-1.5) were significantly more likely to consume BW versus CW. CONCLUSIONS BW consumption among NC children has been increasing and is most prevalent among low-income families and in rural areas.
