Here, we evaluate the effects of a diet rich in low-glycaemic index carbohydrates and fibre (CHO/Fibre diet) or monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA diet), on fasting and postprandial adiponectin concentrations and their relationship with the beneficial effects of the experimental diets on postprandial glucose metabolism and liver fat in type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Fasting and postprandial adiponectin plasma concentrations were measured before and after dietary interventions in the participants to a randomized controlled trial (NCT01025856), wherein 37 men and 8 women with T2D, aged 35-70years, followed a CHO/Fibre diet or a MUFA diet for an 8-week period. Hepatic fat content by
H NMR and fasting and postprandial plasma glucose and insulin measurements were also available.

Fasting adiponectin plasma levels did not change after both diets. Postprandial adiponectin significantly increased after the CHO/fibre diet (9.9±1.6μg/mL vs. 10.8±2.3μg/mL; P=.033) but not after the MUFA diet (10.6±1.8μg/mL vs. APR-246 10.6±1.6μg/mL; P=.935) with a significant difference between changes (P=.035). In the combined CHO/Fibre and MUFA groups, fasting and postprandial adiponectin significantly and inversely correlated with postprandial insulin iAUC at baseline and after intervention, and with liver fat content after intervention.

Single-center prospectively obtained in-office validated questionnaire-based study.

Analysis of prospectively collected surveys at a tertiary care academic center from June 2018 to February 2021. Patients completed two FACE-Q scales Appearance-Related Psychosocial Distress (ARPD) and Social Function (SF). Survey scores, demographics, operative course, and adjuvant therapy data underwent univariate and multivariable analyses.

One hundred and three patients completed surveys at a median of 13.5 months postoperatively (interquartile range 5.2-30.8). Mean ARPD from 0 (no distress) to 100 (maximum distress) was 32.4 (standard error of the mean [SEM] 2.7). Mean SF from 0 (worst functioning) to 100 (best functioning) was 55.5 (SEM 2.7). Postoperative adjuvant radiation was associated with 13.9% higher ARPD (95% CI 3.4-24.4, P=.019) and 10.4% lower SF (95% CI -20.7 to -0.1, P=.047). Each appearance-related question on the ARPD scale independently predicted impaired SF (P < .001 for all questions). Upon multivariable logistic regression, osteocutaneous reconstruction, compared to soft tissue alone (P=.043), and postoperative adjuvant radiation (P=.014) were associated with higher levels of ARPD. Age, sex, relationship status, anxiety or depression history, defect location, and hospital stay were not significantly associated with ARPD or SF scores.

Aesthetic outcomes are important determinants of psychosocial QOL following head and neck microvascular reconstruction an effect that is worsened by adjuvant radiation. Reconstructive surgeons should prioritize aesthetic outcomes, in addition to functional restoration, to optimize social functioning in patients with head and neck tumors.

Cross-sectional area (CSA) reference values using ultrasonography vary widely for lower extremity peripheral nerves. In addition, there is a lack of data on the muscular branches of the tibial nerve and the anatomical variations of the sural nerve. We aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic reference values for lower extremity peripheral nerves considering different anatomical variations and physical factors.

The CSA of the lower extremity nerve was measured at 10 sites. In addition to establishing reference values, differences in the CSA owing to anatomical variations were verified. The relationship between CSA and physical factors, such as age, height, weight, body mass index, and ankle circumference, was also examined.

A total of 100 healthy Japanese volunteers were recruited. The mean CSA of the sural nerve significantly differed depending on its formation pattern (1.4-1.8 mm
). The mean decreases in CSAs from the proximal to distal tibial and fibular nerves within the popliteal region significantly differed based on the fine branching pattern.
