Further study suggested that PGC-1α overexpression elevated fatty acid oxidation related gene expression. Our findings demonstrate the importance of PGC-1α in AKI-induced BBB injury and suggest that it could be a therapeutic target for BBB repair via the regulation of mitochondrial function.Previous work has demonstrated that peoples' gambling-related judgments (e.g., perceived likelihood of winning) are often biased by non-diagnostic unclaimed prize information (i.e., the number of prizes still available to be won) resulting in non-optimal scratch card preferences. Another line of research suggests that people make less biased decisions (e.g., are less affected by the framing of a gamble) when using a foreign language. In the current study, we investigated whether using a foreign language (as opposed to one's native language) reduced the biasing effects of unclaimed prize information and consequently led to more optimal scratch card preferences. Across three experiments (N = 409), we found that people were equally biased by unclaimed prize information regardless of whether they completed our scratch card gambling task in their native (Polish) or foreign (English) language. Smad signaling In conclusion, it appears that using a foreign language does not help people be less biased in utilizing gambling-related information, and consequently does not lead to more optimal scratch card preferences. Two hypotheses have been advanced to explain gambling prevalence and addiction among various populations-the exposure hypothesis and the adaptation hypothesis. This study tests these hypotheses in the context of casino employees in Macau. In the etiology of gambling, casino employees have been considered a unique segment of the population. Employees working in casinos are probably more exposed to gambling stimuli than any other group. The findings suggest that indicators of heavy involvement in casino gambling among casino employees were no higher than among other residents of Macau. In terms of gambling frequency, casino employees actually gambled less often than the general adult population in Macau. These results are in contrast to results from studies of gaming venue employees in Australia and Canada. The differing findings are probably attributable to particularities of Macau discussed in the article. The preference for taking risk troubles people across multiple domains including health, economics, and social well-being. Prior research has demonstrated that risk preference can be influenced by time perspective (TP). However, little is known about the neural substrates underlying the effect of TP on risk preference. Here, we used a voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method across two samples to address this question. In Sample 1, the behavioral results showed a positive correlation between present hedonistic TP (PHTP) and gambling rate (the index of risk preference), indicating the higher PHTP, the greater the preference for risk. Subsequently, the whole-brain VBM results found that gambling rate was negatively correlated with the gray matter (GM) volume of a cluster in the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC). The PHTP score was also negatively related to the GM volume of another cluster in the rPPC. We then examined an overlapping region in the rPPC using a conjunction analysis method. The GM volume of this overlapping brain region was related to both PHTP score and gambling rate. Finally, the mediation analysis found that the GM volume of overlapping region in rPPC played a role in explaining the effect of PHTP on risk preference. This result was also reproduced and validated in another independent sample. Taken together, our findings manifest that the structural variation of rPPC can account for the influence that PHTP has upon the risk preference.PURPOSE Combination carboplatin and S-1 is active in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, data on this combination for elderly patients with NSCLC are insufficient. METHODS Eligibility criteria were no prior chemotherapy, Stage IIIB or IV NSCLC, performance status 0-1, age ≥ 75 years, and adequate hematological, hepatic, and renal functions. Carboplatin was administered on day 1 and S-1 was administered orally, twice a day, between days 1 and 14, repeated every 3 weeks. In phase I, the primary purpose was determination of the recommended dose. Starting doses of carboplatin and S-1 were area under the curve (AUC) of 4 and 80 mg/m2/day, respectively. In the extension study, the effects and tolerability of this combination therapy of recommended dose were confirmed. RESULTS A total of 10 patients were entered into phase I and 14 patients were entered into the extension study. The recommended doses for this drug combination are AUC 5 for carboplatin and 80 mg/m2/day every 3 weeks for S-1. With carboplatin and S-1 combination therapy at the recommended dose, the response rate was 30.0% [95% confidence interval (CI) 12-54%] and the disease control rate was 90.0% (95% CI 68-99%). Thrombocytopenia and neutropenia were major adverse events. CONCLUSIONS The recommended doses for this combination therapy are carboplatin AUC 5 and S-1 80 mg/m2/day every 3 weeks, and this combination is effective with tolerable toxicities for advanced NSCLC patients ≥ 75 years old.The garlic contains sulfur bioactive compounds responsible for medicinal properties. The decrease of these compounds due to inadequate storage conditions reduces the beneficial properties and favors infection by microorganisms. Several studies have shown high frequency of garlic infected with Aspergillus section Nigri that potentially produce mycotoxin. Garlic samples were collected in markets of Brazil and a total of 32 samples (of 36) had the fungal infection with predominant genus Aspergillus (50.3%), Penicillium (34.7%), and Fusarium (11%). A total of 63% (649/1031) of infection with Aspergillus section Nigri, of which 60 isolates were selected for analysis of genetic variability that resulted in 4 clusters. Representatives of clusters were identified by the calmodulin gene. Isolates from cluster I were subdivided into A-I and identified as A. niger (16 isolates) and the isolates of clusters B-I, II, and III were identified as A. welwitschiae (43 isolates). Besides, an isolate of the IV-cluster was identified by A.
