Boron-containing materials have recently been identified as highly selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of alkanes to olefins. It has previously been demonstrated by several spectroscopic characterization techniques that the surface of these boron-containing ODH catalysts oxidize and hydrolyze under reaction conditions, forming an amorphous B2 (OH)x O(3-x/2) (x=0-6) layer. Yet, the precise nature of the active site(s) remains elusive. In this Communication, we provide a detailed characterization of zeolite MCM-22 isomorphously substituted with boron (B-MWW). Using 11 B solid-state NMR spectroscopy, we show that the majority of boron species in B-MWW exist as isolated BO3 units, fully incorporated into the zeolite framework. However, this material shows no catalytic activity for ODH of propane to propene. The catalytic inactivity of B-MWW for ODH of propane falsifies the hypothesis that site-isolated BO3 units are the active site in boron-based catalysts. This observation is at odds with other traditionally studied catalysts like vanadium-based catalysts and provides an important piece of the mechanistic puzzle. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. METHODS Using SEER-Medicare data, we identified bladder cancer patients who underwent radical cystectomy from 2006 to 2011 (n = 4,138). The primary outcome was PET scan use within 6 months before surgery. Immunology chemical To examine predictors of PET scan use, we fit a mixed logit model with health service area as a random effect to account for patients nested within health service areas. We also calculated the adjusted probability of use over time and examined variation among the highest volume surgeons. RESULTS Among the 4,138 patients, 406 (10%) received a pre-operative PET scan. The adjusted probability of a patient undergoing a PET scan increased from 0.04 in 2004 to 0.10 in 2011 (p less then .001). Among the 78 highest volume surgeons, there was significant variation in PET scan use (p less then .001). Patients with non-urothelial histology, measurement of alkaline phosphatase levels, and receipt of neoadjuvant chemotherapy were more likely to receive PET scan (all p less then .05). CONCLUSION Use of PET prior to radical cystectomy doubled over a 5-year period, suggesting its increased use in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, particularly those with high-risk disease. Whether its use is warranted and improves patient outcomes is not clear and requires further studies. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.A common measure of number word understanding is the give-N task. Traditionally, to receive credit for understanding a number, N, children must understand that N does not apply to other set sizes (e.g., a child who gives three when asked for "three" but also when asked for "four" would not be credited with knowing "three"). However, it is possible that children who correctly provide the set size directly above their knower level but also provide that number for other number words ("N+1 givers") may be in a partial, transitional knowledge state. In an integrative analysis including 191 preschoolers, subset knowers who correctly gave N+1 at pretest performed better at posttest than did those who did not correctly give N+1. This performance was not reflective of "full" knowledge of N+1, as N+1 givers performed worse than traditionally-coded knowers of that set size on separate measures of number word understanding within a given timepoint. Results support the idea of graded representations (Munakata, 2001) in number word development and suggest traditional approaches to coding the give-N task may not completely capture children's knowledge. At least in vitro, IGF-II actions are mediated through the IGF-I receptor and to a lesser extent the insulin receptor. After birth, the function of IGF-II is less clear although in adults the serum level of IGF-II exceeds that of IGF-I several fold. The IGF-II gene is maternally imprinted, with exception of the liver and several parts of the brain, where it is expressed from both alleles. The regulation, organization, and translation of the IGF-II gene is complex, with five different putative promotors leading to a range of noncoding and coding mRNAs. The 180-amino acid pre-pro-IGF-II translation product can be divided into five domains and include a N-terminal signal peptide of 24 amino acid residues, the 67 amino acid long mature protein, and an 89 residues extension at the COOH terminus, designated as the E-domain. After removal of the signal peptide, the processing of pro-IGF-II into mature IGF-II requires various steps including glycosylation of the E-domain followed by the action of endo-proteases. Several of these processing intermediates can be found in the human circulation. There is increasing evidence that, besides IGF-II, several incompletely processed precursor forms of the protein, and even a 34-amino acid peptide (preptin) derived from the E-domain of pro-IGF-II, exhibit distinct biological activities. This review will focus on the current insights regarding the specific roles of the latter proteins in cancer, glucose homeostasis, and bone physiology. To address this topic clearly in the right context, a concise overview of the biological and biochemical properties of IGF-II and several relevant aspects of the IGF system will be provided. © 2020 The Author. Herein, a well-defined model system was developed to build structure-reactivity relationships for specific zeolite-channel orientations during various catalytic reaction processes, for example, the methanol- and ethanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH and ETH) process as well as oligomerization reactions. The entrapped and effluent hydrocarbons from single-oriented zeolite ZSM-5 channels during the MTH process were monitored by using operando UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and on-line mass spectrometry (MS), respectively. The results reveal that the straight channels favor the formation of internal coke, promoting the aromatic cycle. Furthermore, the sinusoidal channels produce aromatics, (e.g., toluene) that further grow into larger polyaromatics (e.g., graphitic coke) leading to deactivation of the zeolites.
