Cerebral Hemodynamic Fits involving Transcutaneous Auricular Vagal Neural Stimulation inside Mind Recovery: An Open-Label Initial Review.
This study aimed to define the most consistent white matter microarchitecture pattern in Parkinson's disease (PD) reflected by fractional anisotropy (FA), addressing clinical profiles and methodology-related heterogeneity. Web-based publication databases were searched to conduct a meta-analysis of whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging studies comparing PD with healthy controls (HC) using the anisotropic effect size-signed differential mapping. A total of 808 patients with PD and 760 HC coming from 27 databases were finally included. Subgroup analyses were conducted considering heterogeneity with respect to medication status, disease stage, analysis methods, and the number of diffusion directions in acquisition. Compared with HC, patients with PD had decreased FA in the left middle cerebellar peduncle, corpus callosum (CC), left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and right inferior longitudinal fasciculus. Most of the main results remained unchanged in subgroup meta-analyses of medicated patients, early stage patients, voxel-based analysis, and acquisition with 30 diffusion directions. The subgroup meta-analysis of medication-free patients showed FA decrease in the right olfactory cortex. The cerebellum and CC, associated with typical motor impairment, showed the most consistent FA decreases in PD. Medication status, analysis approaches, and the number of diffusion directions have an important impact on the findings, needing careful evaluation in future meta-analyses.Artificial intelligence (AI) is coming to medicine in a big wave. From making diagnosis in various medical conditions, following the latest advancements in scientific literature, suggesting appropriate therapies, to predicting prognosis and outcome of diseases and conditions, AI is offering unprecedented possibilities to improve care for patients. Gastroenterology is a field that AI can make a significant impact. This is partly because the diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions relies a lot on image-based investigations and procedures (endoscopy and radiology). AI-assisted image analysis can make accurate assessment and provide more information than conventional analysis. AI integration of genomic, epigenetic, and metagenomic data may offer new classifications of gastrointestinal cancers and suggest optimal personalized treatments. In managing relapsing and remitting diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and peptic ulcer bleeding, convoluted neural network may formulate models to predict disease outcome, enhancing treatment efficacy. AI and surgical robots can also assist surgeons in conducting gastrointestinal operations. While the advancement and new opportunities are exciting, the responsibility and liability issues of AI-assisted diagnosis and management need much deliberations. Objective To develop and validate a 3D registration approach by which double echo steady state (DESS) MR images with cartilage thickness segmentations are used to extract the cartilage transverse relaxation time (T2) from multi-echo-spin-echo (MESE) MR images, without direct segmentations for MESE. Materials and methods Manual DESS segmentations of 89 healthy reference knees (healthy) and 60 knees with early radiographic osteoarthritis (early ROA) from the Osteoarthritis Initiative were registered to corresponding MESE images that had independent direct T2 segmentations. For validation purposes, (a) regression analysis of deep and superficial cartilage T2 was performed and (b) between-group differences between healthy vs. early ROA knees were compared for registered vs. direct MESE analysis. Results Moderate to high correlations were observed for the deep (r = 0.80) and the superficial T2 (r = 0.81), with statistically significant between-group differences (ROA vs. healthy) of + 1.4 ms (p = 0.002) vs. + 1.3 ms (p less then 0.001) for registered vs. direct T2 segmentation in the deep, and + 1.3 ms (p = 0.002) vs. AICAR mw + 2.3 ms (p less then 0.001) in the superficial layer. Discussion This registration approach enables extracting cartilage T2 from MESE scans using DESS (cartilage thickness) segmentations, avoiding the need for direct MESE T2 segmentations.Holistic healthcare to the older person is important. Spirituality is considered to be the very essence of being and for some is what motivates and guides us to live a meaningful existence. Nurses caring for the older person need support in responding to their spiritual needs in order to ensure that they are appropriately and successfully met. The aim of this paper is to explore these needs and highlight some evidence indicating how this care can be implemented and therefore ultimately influence nursing practice.Constantin A. (Tino) Rebeiz, a pioneer in the field of chlorophyll biosynthesis, and a longtime member of the University of Illinois community of plant biologists, passed away on July 25, 2019. He came to the USA at a time that was difficult for members of minority groups to be in academia. However, his passion for the complexity of the biochemical origin of chlorophylls drove a career in basic sciences which extended into applied areas of environmentally friendly pesticides and treatment for skin cancer. He was a philanthropist; in retirement, he founded the Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research which recognized excellence and lifetime achievements of selected top scientists in the general area of photosynthesis research. His life history, scientific breakthroughs, and community service hold important lessons for the field.Religious belief and participation may facilitate well-being and the transition to living in the United States for Korean immigrants. However, there is little known about how Korean immigrant young adults obtain social/emotional support from church involvement and benefit from spiritual networks. A qualitative study was conducted through in-depth interviews with 22 members of one Protestant church in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. According to our findings, all respondents were supported in their transition to living in the United States through the social support and well-being effects of religious belief/affiliation. They manifested their belief mainly in two different ways, either engaging in spiritual networks as a church leader or by focusing on their education and livelihoods with their religious belief as a powerful motivator. It is hoped that further study will elucidate more of the mechanisms linking religious belief to the living transition for Korean and other immigrants to the United States.
