The evidence of a connection between the peripheral inflammatory processes and neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system is becoming more apparent. This review of the related literature highlights the most recent clinical, epidemiological, and in vitro studies trying to investigate possible connections between periodontal bacteria and the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. This review was conducted by searching databases such as PubMed and Scopus using keywords or combinations such as Alzheimer's Disease AND periodontal or dementia AND periodontitis OR periodontal. After eliminating overlaps and screening the articles not related to these issues, we identified 1088 records and proceeded to the selection of articles for an evaluation of the associative assumptions. The hypothesis suggested by the authors and confirmed by the literature is that the bacterial load and the inflammatory process linked to periodontal disease can intensify inflammation at the level of the central nervous system, favoring the occurrence of the disease. The analysis of the literature highlights how periodontal disease can directly contribute to the peripheral inflammatory environment by the introduction of periodontal or indirect pathogenic bacteria and proinflammatory cytokines locally produced at the periodontal level following bacterial colonization of periodontal defects.A spatial computational model of a motor vehicle disc brake, based on the system of equations of heat dynamics of friction and wear (HDFW), was developed. The interrelations of temperature-dependent coefficient of friction and coefficient of intensity of wear through the contact temperature and vehicle velocity were taken into account. The solution of the system of equations of HDFW was obtained by the finite element method (FEM) for six different brake pad materials associated with the cast-iron disc during a single braking. Changes in the braking time, coefficient of friction, braking torque, vehicle velocity, mean temperature of the contact area of the pads with the disc and wear of the friction surfaces were determined. Then, the obtained calculation results were evaluated in terms of stabilization of the coefficient of friction (braking torque), as well as minimization of the maximum temperature, wear, braking time and pads mass. As a result, recommendations were given to select optimum brake pad material in combination with a cast-iron disc.Semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted a great amount of multidiscipline research due to their distinctive potential for solar-to-chemical-energy conversion applications, ranging from water and air purification to hydrogen and chemical fuel production. This unique diversity of photoinduced applications has spurred major research efforts on the rational design and development of photocatalytic materials with tailored structural, morphological, and optoelectronic properties in order to promote solar light harvesting and alleviate photogenerated electron-hole recombination and the concomitant low quantum efficiency. This book presents a collection of original research articles on advanced photocatalytic materials synthesized by novel fabrication approaches and/or appropriate modifications that improve their performance for target photocatalytic applications such as water (cyanobacterial toxins, antibiotics, phenols, and dyes) and air (NOx and volatile organic compounds) pollutant degradation, hydrogen evolution, and hydrogen peroxide production by photoelectrochemical cells.Ti3C2Tx/NiZn ferrite composites were synthesized using a co-precipitation hydrothermal method, and further consolidated using electric current field-assisted sintering technology. Nano NiZn ferrites were inserted into the Ti3C2Tx interlayers with uniform coverage on their surfaces. The incorporation of MXenes promoted the sintering kinetics of the NiZn ferrite ceramics. The electrical conductivity increased by six orders of magnitude compared to pure NiZn ferrite ceramics at room temperature. The present work provides a potential way to develop a large family of dense MXenes/ferrite multiphase ceramics. The multiphase ceramics could be potentially used for the on-beam-line higher-order mode load in advanced particle accelerators.Recurrence of endometriosis after surgery constitutes a serious challenge. Whether there is an evolution of lesion subtypes with each recurrence and whether certain lesions subtypes tend to recur faster than others is not adequately addressed. Medical records of all patients who underwent surgery for endometriosis between 1997 and 2018 in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Bern, were reviewed. Inclusion criteria was surgically confirmed endometriosis recurrence, defined as a subsequent surgery for endometriosis after a previous complete surgical excision of endometriosis lesions. Three subtypes of endometriosis were defined superficial peritoneal endometriosis (SUP), ovarian endometrioma (OMA), and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). Time to recurrence and variation in endometriosis subtype between the first and recurrent surgeries were the primary outcome measures. Out of the 322 patients with recurrent surgery that were identified, for 234 of them, the endometriosis subtype at first surgery was confirmed and classified (SUP = 56, OMA = 124, DIE = 54). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/dorsomorphin-2hcl.html No statistically significant difference was found for time to recurrence between lesion subtypes. SUP compared to the other groups had a higher possibility of presenting with SUP at recurrence (Odds Ratio (OR) 3.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.74-7.51) and OMA compared to the other groups had a higher possibility of presenting with OMA at recurrence (OR 3.72, 95% CI 2.04-6.74). Nevertheless, a large number of SUP patients subsequently presented with OMA (10/56 17.9%) or DIE (27/56 48.2%) lesions at recurrence. Similarly, a large number of OMA patients subsequently presented with DIE (49/124 39.5%) lesions at recurrence. In conclusion, although SUP and OMA patients compared to the others are more likely to present with the same subtype at recurrence, increasing lesion subtype severity occurs in a substantial proportion of patients. Time to recurrence is independent from the lesion subtype at first surgery.
