If the components of the dual-channels were not at equal loudness, the loudness summation was reduced with respect to the equal loudness case. The results were incorporated into an existing loudness model by McKay et al. (2003). The predictions from the adapted model were evaluated by comparing the loudness evoked by simultaneous and sequential sound coding strategies. The application of the adapted model resulted in a deviation between predicted and actual behavioral loudness balancing adjustments in electrical level between simultaneous and sequential processing strategies of 0.24 dB on average.Aberrant methylation is a hallmark of hepatocellular carcinoma and plays an important role in tumor initiation and progression. However, the epigenome-wide methylation patterns of portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTTs) have not been fully explored. Here, we performed epigenome-wide DNA methylation of adjacent normal tissues (ANTs), paired tumor tissues and paired PVTTs using an Infinium HumanMethylation450 array (n = 11) and conducted the Sequenom EpiTYPER assays to confirm the aberrantly methylated genes. MTS and apoptosis assay were used to assess the synergistic effect of two drugs on the HCC cell lines. We found the mean global methylation levels of HCC tissues and PVTTs were significantly lower than ANTs (P 10%, P  less then  0.005). The pathway analysis based on hypermethylated genes in PVTT tissues was interestingly enriched in regulation of actin cytoskeleton pathway (P = 4.48E-5). We found 23 genes whose methylation levels were gradually alternated in HCC tissues and PVTTs. Aberrant methylation status of TNFRSF10A, ZC3H3 and SLC9A3R2 were confirmed in a validation cohort (n = 48). The functional experiments demonstrated the combination of decitabine (DAC) and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (rh-TRAIL) could synergistically suppress the proliferation and induce apoptosis in SK-Hep-1 and Huh7 cell lines. Together, our findings indicated that DNA methylation plays an important role in the PVTT formation through regulating the metastasis-related pathways. Genetic correlations between dental measurements have been estimated previously in baboons, humans, and tamarins and indicate variable patterns of modularity by tooth type across these taxa. Here, heritabilities of, and genetic correlations between, linear dental measurements were estimated from the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Relationships between the genetic correlation matrix and matrices designed to test hypotheses of modularity by tooth type, region, function, and development were assessed using a random skewers approach. Dental measurements were found to be moderately to highly heritable, with 24 of 28 heritability estimates differing significantly (p less then 0.05) from zero. Almost all genetic correlations between dental dimensions were positive. The genetic correlation matrix was most similar to a regionally modular matrix, with distinct anterior and postcanine tooth modules. This pattern is consistent with previous quantitative genetic analyses of baboons and previous phenotypic analyses of cercopithecoid primates. The existence of a genetic module for the canines and honing premolar was not supported. Ongoing selection pressures, rather than strong genetic constraints, are likely necessary to preserve functional relationships between the canines and honing premolar based on these findings. The genetic correlation matrix of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques mirrors patterns of phenotypic correlations observed for cercopithecoid primates broadly and demonstrates that genetic contributions to these patterns may be fairly stable over the course of cercopithecoid evolution. The quantitative genetic study of additional taxa will be necessary to determine whether the regional modularity of baboons and macaques, or the integrated pattern of humans and tamarins, is shared more broadly across primates.Routine screening for Chlamydia and gonococcal infection in pregnancy is not widespread, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite their potential adverse consequences on pregnancy outcome. We conducted a systematic literature search of three major databases to review current literature surrounding Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in pregnancy. We discuss the epidemiology and burden of both infections, detection methods, potential adverse feto-maternal and infant outcomes and provide an overview of treatment options. A total of 67 articles met the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae across all trimesters ranged between 1.0%-36.8% and 0-14.2% worldwide, respectively. The most common diagnostic method is the Nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). In pregnancy, chlamydia is associated with preterm birth, spontaneous miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal conjunctivitis, while gonorrhoea is mainly associated with preterm birth and stillbirth. Amoxicillin, erythromycin and azithromycin showed similar efficacy in the treatment of chlamydia in pregnancy, while ceftriaxone and cefixime were effective in treating gonorrhoea in pregnancy. Being largely asymptomatic infections in women, we opine that detection strategies with locally appropriate tools should be combined with the syndromic approach in LMICs, where there is a high burden of disease.Stages of the moult cycle of the amphipod Gammarus pulex have been previously characterised based on the examination of either apolysis of the 3rd dactyl, or the whole body and eye appearance. In the current study the aim was to compare these two established moult staging techniques with a novel X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scan method. The micro-CT provides information on the degree of calcification of the external integument and of the internal structures, such as the gastric mill. The degree of calcification is predicted to change during the moult cycle. Successful micro-CT scans were obtained from 80 G. pulex specimens and the radiological appearance of the 28 specimens immediately immersed in 4 % PFA were not different to the 52 specimens stored in 4 % PFA for at least 28 days prior to scanning. These specimens could be classified into moult stages A, B, C, early D or late D based on the degree of calcification. Good agreement was obtained between all three methods of moult stage classification if fresh specimens were used, but if specimens had been preserved in 4% Paraformaldehyde (PFA) for more than 24 hours the loss of colour from the whole body and eye meant these methods were not suitable.
