ive oil possesses cardiac protective properties against I/R-induced cardiac arrhythmias in rats. It attenuated oxidative stress and diabetes-induced histopathological changes in cardiac tissues. The observed cardiac protectiveness of olive oil in the present investigation may be related to its antioxidant potential. Bone metastasis due to ICC is extremely rare. In this case report, a patient with pathological clavicle fracture as the first presentation of ICC was reported. A lytic mass causing a fracture in the middle part of the left clavicle was detected in a 75-year-old female patient who had sudden and severe pain in her left shoulder while getting up from her seat. Blood tests were normal except gamma-glutamyl transferase 575 U/L (0-38 U/L), alkaline phosphatase 259 U/L (0-105 U/L), direct bilirubin 5.1 mg/dl (0-0.2 mg/dl) and carcinoembryonic antigen 5.1 ng/ml (0-5 ng/ml). Positron emission tomography (PET-CT) revealed a mass in the liver and metastasis to the proximal femur and peritonei carcinomatosis. Pathological clavicle fracture was treated surgically and liver biopsy was performed by an interventional radiologist in the same session. The pathology result was reported as ICC. During the follow-up of the patient, a pathological proximal femur fracture also occurred. This fracture was also treated with total tumor hip replacement. Metastasis of ICC to the bone is extremely rare and should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis in patients presenting with pathological bone fracture and liver mass. With the introduction of the first retinal gene therapy in 2017 the importance of understanding the mechanisms of retinal degeneration and its natural progression has shifted from being of academic interest to being of pivotal for the development of new therapies. Areas covered This review covers standard and innovative diagnostic techniques and complementary examinations needed for the evaluation and treatment of RP. It includes chapters on the assessment of visual function, retinal morphology, and genotyping. Selleckchem MLT-748 Expert Opinion Monitoring the progression of RP can best be achieved by combining assessments of both visual function and morphology. Visual acuity testing using ETDRS charts should be complemented by low-luminance visual acuity and colour vision tests. Assessment of the visual field can also be useful in less advanced cases. In those with central RP involvement measuring retinal sensitivity using microperimetry is recommended. Retinal morphology is best assessed by OCT and autofluorescence. Genetic testing is pivotal as it contributes to the pathophysiological understanding and can guide clinical management as well as identify individuals that could benefit from retinal gene therapy.Included among the currently recognized 23 species of combtooth blennies of the genus Cirripectes (Blenniiformes Blenniidae) of the Indo-Pacific are the Hawaiian endemic C. vanderbilti, and the widespread C. variolosus. During the course of a phylogeographic study of these species, a third species was detected, herein described as C. matatakaro. The new species is distinguished primarily by the configuration of the pore structures posterior to the lateral centers of the transverse row of nuchal cirri in addition to 12 meristic characters and nine morphometric characters documented across 72 specimens and ∼4.2% divergence in mtDNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I. The new species is currently known only from the Marquesas, Gambier, Pitcairns, Tuamotus, and Australs in the South Pacific, and the Northern Line Islands and possibly Johnston Atoll south of Hawai'i. Previous researchers speculated that the geographically widespread C. variolosus was included in an unresolved trichotomy with the Hawaiian endemic and other species based on a morphological phylogeny. Our molecular-phylogenetic analysis resolves many of the previously unresolved relationships within the genus and reveals C. matatakaro as the sister lineage to the Hawaiian C. vanderbilti. The restricted geographic distribution of Cirripectes matatakaro combines with its status as sister to C. vanderbilti to indicate a southern pathway of colonization into Hawai'i. ©2020 Hoban and Williams. The Bathyergidae, commonly known as blesmols or African mole-rats, is a family of rodents well-known for their subterranean lifestyle and tunnelling behaviour. Four of the five extant bathyergid genera (Cryptomys, Fukomys, Georychus and Heliophobius) are chisel-tooth diggers, that is they dig through soil with their enlarged incisors, whereas the remaining genus (Bathyergus) is a scratch-digger, only using its forelimbs for burrowing. Heterocephalus glaber, the naked mole-rat, is also a chisel-tooth digger and was until recently included within the Bathyergidae (as the most basally branching genus), but has now been placed by some researchers into its own family, the Heterocephalidae. Given the importance of the masticatory apparatus in habitat construction in this group, knowledge and understanding of the morphology and arrangement of the jaw-closing muscles in Bathyergidae is vital for future functional analyses. Here, we use diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced microCT to reveal and describe the musclat these differences may be a reflection of the behaviour of Bathyergus which, uniquely in the family, does not use its incisors for digging. © 2020 Cox et al.This study aims at elucidating the environmental factors controlling benthic diatom diversity and uniqueness in Mediterranean mountain ponds. Samples of periphytic diatoms were collected in 45 ponds in Andalusia, south of Spain, and analysed by standard methods. Data analysis reveals that diatom diversity is mainly controlled by elevation and hydroperiod. Contrary to the usual findings in the literature, the highest scores on Shannon's diversity index were found in high-elevation temporary ponds, but this effect is hidden by lake clustering in the analysed dataset. Significant distance-decay similarity (DDS) trends were detected in the analysis of floristic composition among the samples, stressing the importance of spatial factors that may override the effect of other abiotic factors. These findings highlight the role of isolation and dispersal limitation in the configuration of the biogeographical patterns of benthic diatoms. ©2020 Blanco et al.
