In the boreal forest, post-fire abiotic filters may control community assembly by selecting plants with specific traits. Ericaceous heaths are characterized by low FD and are thought to be subject to such filters. We hypothesized that soil parameters select for a specific suite of traits and act as a secondary abiotic filter in post-fire ericaceous heath and contribute to the observed reduction of FD. We measured six soil parameters, five functional traits, and plant species abundances in eight post-fire heath and four regenerating forest sites in Eastern Canada. We conducted a combined analysis of RLQ (R-table Linked to Q-table) and fourth-corner methods to examine the links between plant traits and plot-level soil parameters, mediated by species abundances. Only below ground traits were significantly linked to soil variables. Specific root length and ericoid mycorrhizal associations were negatively linked to total soil nitrogen, available ammonium, and pH. Post-fire heath soils favour a specific suite of species traits. Only a portion of the regional species pool possesses the above-mentioned traits, and when they are favoured by habitat conditions, they assemble into a community with low FD. Wnt inhibitor The novelty of our study is here we show how the relationship between traits and soil chemistry can act as a secondary filter and exert community-level trait changes responsible for the low functional diversity observed in heaths.
A survival paradox between T4N0 (stage IIB/C) and T3N1 (stage IIIB) colon cancer has been rarely reported. The indication and regimen of adjuvant chemotherapy are separately described in the guidelines. This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic factors and investigate proper adjuvant treatment in colon cancer patients at these stages.
Patients who underwent R0 resection for pathological T4N0 (n = 49), T1-2N1 (n = 31), or T3N1 (n = 82) colon cancer between 2008 and 2016 at a single institute were retrospectively reviewed. The clinicopathological characteristics, status of adjuvant chemotherapy, and oncologic outcomes of patients with T4N0 tumors were compared with those of patients with T1-2N1 and T3N1 tumors.
The biological characteristics of T4N0 tumors were more aggressive compared with the characteristics of T1-2N1 tumors and were similar to those of T3N1 tumors. The usage rate of oxaliplatin as an adjuvant chemotherapy was significantly lower in T4N0 patients than in T1-2N1 and T3N1 patients. The rate of local recurrence was the highest in patients with T4N0 tumors, and the survival outcomes for patients with T4N0 tumors were significantly worse compared with those of T1-2N1 patients and were similar to those of T3N1 patients. A multivariate analysis revealed that lack of adequate use of oxaliplatin for adjuvant chemotherapy was the only prognostic factor.

To date, the assimilation of nitrate has been considered inefficient because of the apparent energy cost imposed on cell metabolism. Recent research, however, has shown that nitrate promotes growth rate and ethanol yield when oxygen is absent from the environment. Given this, the present work aimed to identify the biological mechanisms behind this physiological behaviour. Proteomic analyses comparing four contrasting growth conditions gave some clues on how nitrate could be used as primary nitrogen source by D. bruxellensis GDB 248 (URM 8346) cells in anaerobiosis. The superior anaerobic growth in nitrate seems to be a consequence of increased cell metabolism (glycolytic pathway, production of ATP and NADPH and anaplerotic reactions providing metabolic intermediates) regulated by balanced activation of TORC1 and NCR de-repression mechanisms. On the other hand, the poor growth observed in aerobiosis is likely due to an oxidative stress triggered by nitrate when oxygen is present. These results represent a milestone regarding the knowledge about nitrate metabolism and might be explored for future use of D. bruxellensis as an industrial yeast. KEY POINTS • Nitrate can be regarded as preferential nitrogen source for D. bruxellensis. • Oxidative stress limits the growth of D. bruxellensis in nitrate in aerobiosis. • Nitrate is a nutrient for novel industrial bioprocesses using D. bruxellensis.
In the classical description of normal liver anatomy, the umbilical fissure is a long, narrow groove that receives the ligamentum teres hepatis. The pons hepatis is an anatomic variant, where the umbilical fissure is converted into a tunnel by an overlying bridge of liver parenchyma. We carried out a study to evaluate the existing variations of the umbilical fissure in a Caribbean population.
We observed all consecutive autopsies performed at a facility in Jamaica and selected cadavers with a pons hepatis for detailed study. A pons hepatis was considered present when the umbilical fissure was covered by hepatic parenchyma. We recognized two variants an open-type (incomplete) pons hepatis in which the umbilical fissure was incompletely covered by parenchyma ≤ 2cm in length and a closed type (complete) pons hepatis in which the umbilical fissure was covered by a parenchymal bridge > 2cm and thus converted into a tunnel. We measured the length (distance from transverse fissure to anterior margin of the parenchymatous bridge), width (extension across the umbilical fissure in a coronal plane) and thickness (distance from the visceral surface to the hepatic surface measured at the mid-point of the parenchymal bridge in a sagittal plane) of each pons hepatis.
