ritium content, low salinity, and bulk chemistry all suggest such waters to be a mix of pre-bomb (deeper flow-lines within the aquifer) and recent water, with no contribution from the deepest Continental Intercalaire groundwaters. The proposed approach reduces ambiguity about the studied aquifer systems, greatly improves the conceptual understanding of their behaviour, and could provide insights into the vulnerability of the aquifers to different anthropogenic pollution phenomena. The methodology used appears to be a valid tool that could be applied to other geographical areas, to inform the design and implementation of efficient management strategies aimed at improving the quality and availability of water resources. Moreover, three-dimensional modelling methods are becoming increasingly applied to different aspects of groundwater management, to obtain a detailed picture of subsurface conditions.Hydrograph recessions, usually described through a power-law function of river flows, are among the most widely utilized hydrological signatures. Whereas theories explaining the genesis of recession exponents have been recently developed, ongoing discussions on the physical meaning and suitable proxies of recession coefficients suggest their linkage to soil moisture states of whole river basins. This work investigates the possibility to explain hydrograph recession coefficients by means of satellite-derived soil moisture products such as the Soil Water Index of Copernicus Global Land Service. Analyses of basin-averaged Soil Water Index, computed for eleven river basins from the Central and Eastern United States with varied climates and landscapes, reveal the existence of an inverse relation between mean soil moisture and its variability in time, and provide a glance into the variability of river flows. A visible signature of satellite-derived soil moisture conditions on the values of the recession coefficient as well emerges when statistics of the Soil Water Index are paired with recession properties obtained by means of hydrograph recession analysis. In particular, drier river basins characterized by larger soil moisture variability tend to exhibit larger and more variable recession coefficients. These results suggest reliability of existing conjectures about the role of soil moisture for determining recession properties, and indicate that satellite-derived products can inform understanding of the intrinsic variability of the hydrologic response in river basins.Coal-fired power plants are important sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions in the world. The effects of various air pollution control devices (APCDs) on PAH emissions were investigated by analyzing samples from inlets and outlets of APCDs in six coal-fired power plants (A-F) and two coal-fired industrial boilers (G and H). The APCDs were electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), wet flue gas desulfurization systems (WFGDs), and wet ESPs (WESPs). The PAH congener patterns for the coal-fired plants were similar. Gas-phase PAHs were dominant in flue gases, and the most abundant PAH was naphthalene. Three- and four-ring PAHs were dominant in fly ash. Positive correlations were found between the PAH and total organic carbon contents of fly ash (R2 0.87) and slag (R2 0.92). Repotrectinib purchase Plants D-F, equipped with low-low-temperature ESPs (LLT-ESPs) and WESPs discharged the lowest PAHs. Circulating water was an important source of PAHs in the desulfurization except in plant A, which used desalinated seawater rather than circulating water in the desulfurization process. WESPs decreased PAH concentrations by an average of 20.67%, which can be spread to other plants to reduce PAHs.Data on the occurrence of cocaine (COC) and benzoylecgonine (BE) in marine environmental compartments are still limited, with few studies reporting superficial water contamination, mainly in tropical zones. In this sense, environmental data of these substances are essential to identify potential polluting sources, as well as their impact in costal ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of COC and BE in seawater, sediment and mussels from a subtropical coastal zone (Santos Bay, São Paulo, Brazil), as well as to determine a field measured Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF). COC and BE were detected in all water samples in concentrations ranging from 1.91 ng·L-1 to 12.52 ng·L-1 and 9.88 ng·L-1 to 28.53 ng·L-1, respectively. In sediments, only COC was quantified in concentrations ranging from 0.94 ng·g-1 to 46.85 ng·g-1. Similarly, only COC was detected in tissues of mussels 0.914 μg·kg-1 to 4.58 μg·kg-1 (ww). The field-measured BAF ranged from 163 to 1454 (L·kg-1). Our results pointed out a widespread contamination by cocaine and its main human metabolite benzoylecgonine in Santos Bay. Mussels were able to accumulate COC in areas used by residents and tourists for bathing, fishing, and harvest, denoting concern to human health. Therefore, our data can be considered a preliminary assessment, which indicates the need to evaluate drugs (including illicit as COC) in environmental and seafood monitoring programs, in order to understand their risks on the ecosystem and human health.Photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO) is one of the major sources for atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH), playing significant role in initiating tropospheric photochemical reactions for ozone (O3) production. However, scarce field investigations were conducted to elucidate this effect. In this study, a field campaign was conducted at a suburban site in southwest China. The whole observation was classified into three periods based on O3 levels and data coverage the serious O3 pollution period (Aug 13-18 as P1), the O3 pollution period (Aug 22-28 as P2) and the clean period (Sep 3-12 as P3), with average O3 peak values of 96 ppb, 82 ppb and 44 ppb, respectively. There was no significant difference of the levels of O3 precursors (VOCs and NOx) between P1 and P2, and thus the evident elevation of OH peak values in P1 was suspected to be the most possible explanation for the higher O3 peak values. Considering the larger contribution of HONO photolysis to HOX primary production than photolysis of HCHO, O3 and ozonolysis of Alkenes, sensitivity tests of HONO reduction on O3 production rate in P1 are conducted by a 0-dimension model.
