The adsorption of pairwise interacting particles on fractal surfaces has been studied by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. It has been postulated that long-term heavy metal(loid) exposure by vegetable consumption is associated with chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu) that prevails in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. We performed a human health risk assessment to identify if there is any link between heavy metal(loid) exposure from vegetable consumption and the prevalence of CKDu. The study includes a survey of food consumption in CKDu-impacted areas and determination of the heavy metal(loid) contents of market vegetables. We found that Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Momordica charantia (bitter gourd) accumulated Pb to a greater extent than other vegetables and exceeded the permissible concentration for foodstuffs. The Cd content of Solanum melongena (Brinjal) also exceeded permissible levels. However, the As content was below permissible levels for all the vegetables tested. The weekly total heavy metal(loid) intake of Cd, As and Pb in vegetables in CKDu-impacted areas was lower than permissible limits. The consumption of an average amount of vegetables does not pose a chronic health risk to the consumers. There was no evidence of a link between the consumption of heavy metal(loid)s in vegetables and CKDu. Since, few vegetables showed marked heavy metal(loid) accumulation, periodical monitoring of heavy metal(loid) concentrations in vegetables will be beneficial for avoidance of future possible health risks.Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults. Although the overall incidence is less than 10 per 100,000 individuals, its poor prognosis and low survival rate make GBM a crucial public health issue. The main challenges for GBM treatment are related to tumor location and its complex and heterogeneous biology. In this sense, a broad range of nanoparticles with different sizes, architectures, and surface properties, have been engineered as brain drug delivery systems. Among them, lipid-based nanoparticles, such as liposomes, have been pointed out as promising materials to deliver antitumoral drugs to the central nervous system and thus, to improve brain drug targeting and therapeutic efficiency. Here, we describe the synthesis and general characteristics of lipid-based nanoparticles, as well as evidence in the past 5 years regarding their potential use to treat GBM.Blood coagulation represents one of the most studied processes in biomedical modelling. However, clinical applications of this modelling remain limited because of the complexity of this process and because of large inter-patient variation of the concentrations of blood factors, kinetic constants and physiological conditions. A tobamovirus isolate infecting a wild Coccinia grandis plant was collected in central Sudan in 2012. Its host range appeared to be mostly limited to cucurbits. Its full-length genome sequence was determined and found to be 85% identical to those of isolates of cucumber fruit mottle mosaic virus (CFMMV) described in Israel and Korea, whereas the aa sequence identity to CFMMV isolates was 92 to 95%, depending on the protein. Based on its biological and molecular properties, we suggest that the Sudanese isolate should be considered a divergent isolate of CFMMV. This is the first description of CFMMV in Africa. Its high divergence from isolates from Israel and Korea suggests a lack of recent exchanges between CFMMV from Sudan and the other known populations.
We aimed to assess whether residual hepatitis B virus (HBV) viraemia is associated with HCC development.

This is a case-control study of 104 patients [52 HCC and 52 non-HCC (matched with age, gender, cirrhosis and treatment duration)] on ≥ 3years entecavir (ETV) with unquantifiable HBV DNA by Cobas Taqman assay v2.0 (Roche Diagnostics; lower limit of quantification [LLOQ] 20IU/mL). Serial sera within 1, 1-2, and > 2years prior to HCC diagnosis or last follow-up (LFU) were measured for HBV DNA and pre-genomic (pg) RNA using a highly sensitive semi-quantitative PCR assay with lower limit of detection of 10IU/mL and LLOQ of 51.5IU/mL, respectively.

Among the 104 patients (80.8% male, median age 61.2years old, 38.5% cirrhosis, median duration of ETV 45.5months), 38.5% and 9.6% HCC patients had undetectable serum DNA and pgRNA, respectively, compared to 65.4% and 36.5% in non-HCC patients; P = 0.005 & 0.001, respectively, at the time of HCC diagnosis/LFU.
