Growing evidence indicates that the exocrine pancreas has a bidirectional relationship with iron metabolism. Studies have shown alterations in circulating markers of iron metabolism, iron absorption, and intra-pancreatic iron deposition in pancreatitis. At the same time, exocrine pancreatic dysfunction has been shown in iron overload disorders. These observations reveal a compelling connection between the exocrine pancreas and iron metabolism, which are further elucidated by observations of therapeutic benefits of iron chelating agents and pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. While the pancreas is not a major reservoir of iron in the body, better understanding of its relationship with iron metabolism may yield unexpected insights.Chinese newborns have been screened for inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) for over 20 years. Although China features 56 different ethnic groups, there are no specific data describing the incidence of such genetic errors across difference ethnicities. To understand the ethnic preference distribution of the incidence and variants of IEM in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China, 189,354 newborns from 2016 to 2019 were screened by tandem mass spectrometry, including 87,482 from the Han ethnic population, 88,229 from the Hui population, 1,103 from other ethnicities, and 12,540 infants without ethnic registration. Suspected cases then underwent specific genetic profiling by targeted next generation sequencing. In total, 160 patients were diagnosed with 17 types of IEM, with a significant higher incidence in Hui infants (1/1,003) than in Han infants (1/1,232). Five diseases (eight patients) were specifically detected in Han infants, while three were exclusively diagnosed in six Hui infants. For shared diseases, the variants of keys genes also showed ethnic preference. Our findings enhance our understanding of the genetics underlying IEM, thus promoting the development of treatment plans for patients from different areas or ethnicities in China.
We investigated the associations between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to high-density cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (LDL-C/HDL-C) with structural and functional early atherosclerosis vascular changes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

This hospital-based cross-sectional study included 814 patients with T2DM. Structural atherosclerotic parameters included carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and carotid plaque, the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) was considered as the functional parameter. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression models were preformed to identify the associations between LDL-C/HDL-C with atherosclerotic parameters.

Increased LDL-C/HDL-C corresponded with the increase levels in CIMT and percentage of carotid plaque. LDL-C/HDL-C was found to be positively associated with CIMT both in female and male patients in unadjusted model. This association persisted in male patients but not in female patients after adjusted for other related factors. No association was found between LDL-C/HDL-C with CAVI both in female and male patients. LDL-C/HDL-C was positively associated with the presence of carotid plaque in male patients. However, this association was not found in female patients.

Here we investigated the significance of serum nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 6 (ND6), which is encoded by mtDNA and can attract neutrophils, in AAV.

Thirty-seven AAV patients (32 patients with positive myeloperoxidase-ANCA and 5 patients with proteinase 3-ANCA) were enrolled. Relationship between serum ND6 and clinico-laboratory characteristics were analyzed.

The ND6 level of patients was higher than normal people (46.56±23.67pg/mL vs. 4.95±2.45pg/mL, P<0.001) The ND6 levels of patients who needed hemodialysis at disease onset and who had pulmonary hemorrhage (PH) were higher than that of the corresponding controls (P=0.004 and 0.044 respectively). The ND6 level negatively correlated with the percentages of normal glomeruli in kidney biopsy. The AUC of ROC curve to diagnose hemodialysis and PH was 0.804 and 0.750 respectively. ND6 level positively correlated with Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score in active disease, and returned to normal after remission.
