Neonatal mortality currently accounts for more than 60% of all infant mortality in Armenia. The majority of health professionals in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) however, have had no specialized training in neonatology. Local and global agencies have emphasized the need for improvement in the education and skills of NICU health professionals. The objective of this study was to design, implement, and evaluate an innovative tele-education program for NICU nurses in Armenia.
Seven online tele-education courses were designed on various neonatal nursing topics using Final Cut Pro and translated professionally to Armenian. The videos were uploaded to YouTube. All NICU nurses employed in two hospitals (n=35) in Yerevan, Armenia, completed a diagnostic pretest, course viewing, a posttest, and a satisfaction survey for each topic. A difference in knowledge was defined as the number of correct test answers obtained before and after the course. Participant satisfaction was measured using a Likert scale.
The combined average for completed pre-tests for all courses was 45% and 71% for post-tests, which was statistically significant for each course (p<0.05). A majority of the nurses either agreed or strongly agreed with all of the satisfaction parameters of the course.
These results support a tele-education model for effectively providing continuing education to NICU nurses in Armenia. A similar platform could be used to establish nationwide certification programs for neonatal nurses.

Despite huge research efforts, conclusive insights into the disease mechanisms are still lacking. Therefore, therapeutic strategies are limited to symptomatic treatments. A common histopathological hallmark of many neurodegenerative diseases is the presence of large pathognomonic protein aggregates, but their role in the disease pathology is unclear and subject to controversy. Here, we discuss imaging methods allowing investigation of these structures within their cellular environment conventional electron microscopy (EM), super-resolution light microscopy (SR-LM), and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). Multidisciplinary approaches are key for understanding neurodegenerative diseases and may contribute to the development of effective treatments. For simplicity, we focus on huntingtin aggregates, characteristic of Huntington's disease.
The aims of this study were to identify dietary patterns in a general population of North Italian adults and to investigate the cross-sectional association between prevalent dietary patterns and arterial stiffness.
Participants to the RoCAV study without chronic diseases at recruitment and with reliable dietary data were included. The food-frequency EPIC questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary habits. Dietary patterns were estimated using principal components analysis and Mediterranean diet adherence score (MedS). Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) was used as proxy of arterial stiffness. selleck compound Basing on data from 2640 subjects (1608 men and 1032 women, mean±SD 65.5±6.7 years), four principal components (PC) were retained, explaining 24% of the overall variance. Considering 1284 subjects with cfPWV (mean±SD 10.7±2.5m/s) data available, adherence to PC1 (Western-like dietary pattern) was associated with higher stiffness values (+0.29m/s cfPWV for 1 SD increase of PC1, 95% CI0.08,0.50; p=0.007) in a multivariate model. Conversely, adherence to PC2 (Mediterranean-like) was not related to cfPWV values (-0.18, 95% CI -0.36, 0.004; p=0.06). Likewise, MedS and other PC patterns did not show any significant association with cfPWV. Mediation analysis showed that the association between Western-like dietary pattern and cfPWV is mediated by higher levels of leucocytes (9.2% of the effect, p=0.047).

Bariatric patients often suffer from vitamin D (VD) deficiency, and both, morbid obesity and VD deficiency, are related to an adverse effect on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Therefore, we assessed the change of known CVD risk factors and its associations during the first 12 months following one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB).
In this secondary analysis, CVD risk factors, medical history and anthropometric data were assessed in fifty VD deficient (25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) <75nmol/l) patients, recruited for a randomized controlled trial of VD supplementation. Based on previous results regarding bone-mass loss and the association between VD and CVD risk, the study population was divided into patients with 25(OH)D ≥50nmol/l (adequate VD group; AVD) and into those <50nmol/l (inadequate VD group; IVD) at 6 and 12 months (T6/12) postoperatively. In the whole cohort, substantial remission rates for hypertension (38%), diabetes (30%), and dyslipidaemia (41%) and a significant reduction in CVD r46-16).
Limited number of studies investigated lipid profile in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with inconsistent results. This study aimed to investigate lipid parameters in sera of patients with stable COPD and their associations with disease severity, smoking, comorbidities and therapy.
The study included 137 COPD patients and 95 controls. Triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were assessed. Non-HDL-C (NHC), atherogenic coefficient (AC), TG/HDL-C, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli's risk index I and II (CRI-I, CRI-II), and monocyte to HDL ratio (MHR) were calculated. HDL-C and MHR were increased, while other lipid parameters and indices were decreased in COPD patients compared to healthy individuals. Smoking did not influence lipid parameters. However, lipid profile was altered only in more severe disease stages. AC, CRI-I and CRI-II showed positive association with lung function parameters in COPD patients, and negative with COPD multicomponent indices (ADO, BODCAT, BODEx, CODEx and DOSE).
