We analyzed patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain suggesting possible coronary artery disease (CAD) who received coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Ordinal logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratio for the association of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and CAC. Patients with a CAC score ≥ 100 were followed for cardiovascular events or changes in medical management. Our cohort included 542 individuals (263 male, 279 female). Ordinal logistic regression model showed that among traditional cardiovascular risk factors, male sex had the highest odds ratio (OR) of 3.04 (p 100 with an average follow-up of 346 days, there was an increase in both aspirin and statin use, yet significant sex differences were observed especially in patients with non-obstructive lesions on CCTA. Among male patients with non-obstructive lesions, 68.2% were on aspirin and 86.4% were on statin therapy after the CCTA compared to 27.3% and 45.5% respectively in their female counterparts. In conclusion, sex not only is the most powerful predictor for higher CAC among traditional cardiovascular risk factors in symptomatic patients but also influences the contribution of various traditional risk factors to elevated CAC. We aimed to compare cardiovascular phenotypes in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF), or both. We studied 159 subjects with COPD alone (n = 48), HFpEF alone (n = 79) and HFpEF + COPD (n = 32). Patients with comorbid HFpEF + COPD also exhibited greater thoracic aortic stiffness assessed by pulse-wave velocity (11.3, 95% CI 8.7-14.0 m/s; p = 0.004) and pulsatile load imposed by the ascending aorta as measured by aortic characteristic impedance (139 dsc; 95%CI=111-166; p = 0.005). Participants with HFpEF, with or without COPD, exhibited greater abdominal and pericardial fat, without difference in thoracic skeletal muscle size. We explored trends in pediatric hospitalizations for acute myocarditis from 2007 to 2016 in the United States (US). This was a retrospective, serial cross-sectional study of the National Inpatient Sample database from 2007 to 2016, identifying patients ≤18 years hospitalized with acute myocarditis. Patient demographics and incidence trends were examined. Other relevant clinical and resource utilization outcomes were also explored. Out of 60,390,000 weighted pediatric hospitalizations, 6371 were related to myocarditis. The incidence of myocarditis increased from 0.7 to 0.9 per 100,000 children (p less then 0.0001) over the study period. The mortality decreased from 7.5% to 6.1% (p = 0.02). A significant inflation-adjusted increase by $4,574 in the median hospitalization cost was noted (p = 0.02) while length of stay remained stable (median 6.1 days). Tachyarrhythmias were identified as the most common type of associated arrhythmia. The occurrence of congestive heart failure remained steady at 27%. In conclusion, in-hospital mortality associated with pediatric acute myocarditis has decreased in the United States over years 2007 to 2016 with a concurrent rise in incidence. Despite steady length of stay, hospitalization costs have increased. Future studies investigating long-term outcomes relating to acute myocarditis are warranted.Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory condition with occasional cardiac involvement (CS), which may be associated with risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). As data on VTE in CS are sparse and corticosteroid therapy has not been previously examined, we aim to determine the association between CS, corticosteroid treatment for CS, and VTE. Patients referred to our institution with concern for sarcoidosis and underwent a positron emission tomography (PET) scan were retrospectively assessed. Chi-squared and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to determine the association between a diagnosis of sarcoidosis, CS, corticosteroid use, and VTE events. Six hundred and forty nine patients were split into 3 categories 235 with no sarcoidosis (NS), 91 with extra-cardiac sarcoidosis only (ECS), and 323 with CS (isolated CS and/or CS with extra cardiac sarcoid).
