Objective To characterize head movements in children with ADHD using an ex-Gaussian distribution and examine associations with out-of-scanner sustained attention. Method Fifty-six children with ADHD and 61 controls aged 9 to 11 years completed the Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In-scanner head motion was calculated using ex-Gaussian estimates for mu, sigma, and tau in delta variation signal and framewise displacement. Sustained attention was evaluated through omission errors and tau in response time on the SART. Results Mediation analysis revealed that out-of-scanner attention lapses (omissions during the SART) mediated the relationship between ADHD diagnosis and in-scanner head motion (tau in delta variation signal), indirect effect B = 1.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [0.07, 3.15], accounting for 29% of the association. Conclusion Findings suggest a critical link between trait-level sustained attention and infrequent large head movements during scanning (tau in head motion) and highlight fundamental challenges in measuring the neural basis of sustained attention.Background Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) enables noninvasive Demodex mite detection in rosacea. Objective scoring of rosacea severity is currently lacking.Objectives To determine the value of RCM for monitoring Demodex, inflammation and vascular parameters in rosacea during treatment.Methods In 20 rosacea patients, clinical and RCM examination were performed before, during, and 12 weeks after a 16-week treatment course with topical ivermectin. Using RCM, number of mites and inflammatory cells, epidermal thickness, and vascular density and diameter were measured. RCM features were correlated with clinical assessment.Results Treatment resulted in clinical reduction of inflammatory lesions. Mites were detected in 80% of patients at baseline, 30% at week 16, and 63% at week 28. The number of mites reduced significantly during treatment, but no changes in inflammatory cells, epidermal thickness or vascular parameters were observed. Correlation between number of inflammatory lesions and mites was low. None of the RCM variables were significant predictors for clinical success.Conclusions RCM enables anti-inflammatory effect monitoring of topical ivermectin by determining mite presence. Quantifying exact mite number, and inflammatory and vascular characteristics is challenging due to device limitations. In its current form, RCM seems of limited value for noninvasive follow-up of rosacea in clinical practice.Objective This study explored the associations of asthma and long-term asthma control medication with tooth wear among American adolescents and young adults.Methods Data from 2186 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used. Asthma and prescribed long-term medication were collected through questionnaires. The number of surfaces with tooth wear was determined during clinical examinations. Associations were tested in Hurdle regression models adjusting for confounders.Results The prevalence of tooth wear was 58%, with an average of 6.1 (SD 4.0) surfaces affected among those with the condition. The prevalence of asthma was 10.3%, with 2.9% of participants using long-term medication for asthma control. In the adjusted regression model, asthma was not associated with tooth wear. However, long-term control medication was associated with greater odds of having tooth wear (odds ratio 3.33; 95%CI 1.24-8.97), but it was not associated with the number of surfaces with tooth wear among those with the condition (rate ratio 1.01; 95% CI 0.58-1.75).Conclusion This cross-sectional analysis of national data shows that taking long-term asthma medication was positively associated with having tooth wear.Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) measurements are influenced by several factors. We investigated the effect of sample delivery conditions on RAAS measurements including sample storage temperature and time. Blood samples were collected from thirty participants using enzyme inhibitor tubes and serum separation gel evacuated tubes. Plasma and serum from fresh blood samples without further storage (as baseline), and from blood samples that were stored at either 0 °C, 4 °C, or 25 °C for 3 h, 6 h and 24 h, respectively, were extracted and stored at -30 °C for batch measurements using radioimmunoassay. Concentrations of Aldosterone (Ald) decreased following delivery temperature and time, and were significantly different when samples were set aside at 0 °C for 24 h (p  less then  .01), 4 °C for 6 h (p  less then  .01), and 25 °C for 3 h (p  less then  .05). However, levels of Angiotensin (Ang I) increased following delivery temperature and time, and were significantly different when samples were set aside at 0 °C and 4 °C for 6 h (p  less then  .05) and at 25 °C for 3 h (p  less then  .001). However, no changes were observed for the concentrations of plasma renin activity (PRA) and Ang II, except for Ang II which increased significantly when samples were set aside at 25 °C for 24 h (p  less then  .001).
