The three arylsulfonamides examined in this study largely shift the fragmentation patterns in similar ways, despite their differences in binding affinities.Emerging epidemiological evidence has associated exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with chronic diseases including cardiometabolic diseases and neurodegeneration. However, little information is available about their subacute effects, which may accumulate over years and contribute to chronic disease development. To fill this knowledge gap, we designed a natural experiment among 26 healthy young adults who were exposed to elevated PAHs for 10 weeks after traveling from Los Angeles to Beijing in 2014 and 2015. Serum was collected before, during, and after the trip for metabolomics analysis. We identified 50 metabolites that significantly changed 6-8 weeks after the travel to Beijing (FDR less then 5%). The network analysis revealed two main independent modules. Module 1 was allocated to oxidative homeostasis-related response and module 2 to delayed enzymatic deinduction response. Remarkably, the module 1 metabolites were recovered 4-7 weeks after participants' return, while the module 2 metabolites were not. Urinary hydroxylated PAHs were significantly associated with metabolites from both modules, while PAH carboxylic acids, likely metabolites of alkylated PAHs, were only associated with antioxidation-related metabolites. These results suggested differential subacute effects of unsubstituted and alkylated PAHs. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the role of the reversibility of metabolite changes in adverse health effects of PAHs.The multidecadal expansion of northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf hypoxia is a striking example of the adverse effects of anthropogenic nutrient enrichment on coastal oceans. Increased nutrient inputs and widespread shelf hypoxia have resulted in numerous dissolved oxygen (DO) water quality problems in nearshore coastal waters of Louisiana. A large hydrographic dataset compiled from research programs spanning 30 years and the three-dimensional hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model CGEM (Coastal Generalized Ecosystem Model) were integrated to explore the interconnections of low DO waters across the continental shelf to nearshore coastal waters of Louisiana. Cross-shelf vertical profiles showed contiguous low DO bottom waters extending from the shelf to coastal waters nearly every year in the 30+ year time series, which were concurrent with strong cross-shelf pycnoclines. A threshold Brunt-Väisälä frequency of 40 cycles h-1 was critical to maintaining the cross-shelf subpycnocline layers and facilitating the formation of a contiguous low DO water mass. Field observations and model simulations identified periods of wind-driven bottom water upwelling lasting between several days to several weeks, resulting in both physical advection of oxygen-depleted offshore waters to the nearshore and enhanced nearshore stratification. Both the upwelling of low DO bottom waters and in situ respiration were of sufficient temporal and spatial extent to drive DO below Louisiana's DO water quality criteria. Basin-wide nutrient management strategies aimed at reducing nutrient inputs and shelf hypoxia remain essential to improving the nearshore coastal water quality across the northern Gulf of Mexico.Interfacial solar evaporators (ISEs) for seawater desalination have garnered enormous attention in recent decades due to global water scarcity. Despite the progress in the energy conversion efficiency and production rate of ISE, the poor portability of large-area ISE during transportation as well as the clogging of water transport pathways by precipitated salts during operation remain grand challenges for its fielded applications. Here, we designed an ISE with high energy conversion efficiency and shape morphing capability by integrating carbon nanotube (CNT) fillers with a light-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP, cross-linked polycyclooctene (cPCO)). Utilizing the shape memory effect, our ISE can be folded to an origami with 1/9 of its original size to save space for transportation and allow for on-demand unfolding upon sunlight irradiation when deployed in service. In addition, the ISE is equipped with a real-time clogging monitoring function by measuring the capacitance of the electric double layer (EDL) formed at the evaporator/seawater nanointerface. Due to its good energy conversion efficiency, high portability, and clogging monitoring capability, we envisage our ISE as a promising selection in solar evaporation technologies. With the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and the formation of biofilms by bacteria and fungi, microbial infections gradually threaten global health. Natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have low susceptibility for developing resistance due to the membrane targeted mechanism, but instability and high manufacturing cost limit their applications in clinic. Bile acids, a group of steroids in the human body, with high stability, biocompatibility, and inherent facial amphiphilic structure similar to the characteristics of AMPs, have been applied to the biological field, such as drug delivery systems, self-healing hydrogels, antimicrobials, and so on. In this review, we mainly focus on the different classes of bile acid-based antimicrobials in recent years. Various designs and methods for the preparation of unimolecular antimicrobials with bile acid skeletons are first introduced, including coupling of primary amine, quaternary ammonium, and amino acid units with bile acid skeletons. Some representative oligomeric antimicrobials, including dimers of bile acids, are summarized. Fezolinetant solubility dmso Finally, macromolecular antimicrobials bearing some positive charges at the main chain or side chain and interaction mechanisms of these bile acid-based antimicrobials are discussed.Infection and delayed wound healing are two major serious complications related to traumatic injuries and cause a significant burden to patients and society. Most currently available drug delivery materials typically carry a single drug, lack protection from drug loading, and face challenges in on-demand and precisely controlled drug release. Here, we report a flower (Cirsium arvense)-inspired capsule-integrated multilayer nanofilm (FICIF), synthesized using a layer-by-layer self-assembly, for programmed multiple drug co-delivery for trauma (open fracture as an example) treatments. Our approach allows polypeptide multilayer nanofilms and innovative impregnated capsules to assemble hierarchical reservoirs with specific drug binding sites, shielding protection capability, and ordered packing structures. The resultant FICIF nanocarriers enable sustained and on-demand co-delivery of a unique immune-tuning cytokine (interleukin 12p70) and a growth factor (bone morphogenetic protein 2) in clinical use, resulting in extraordinary anti-infection (3 orders of magnitude improved bacterial killing) and bone regeneration (5 times enhanced bone healing) in treating infected rat femur fractures.
