This finding underscores the importance of future research related to the economic security of adults on the autism spectrum.OBJECTIVES No study has assessed utilization of hospital-level mental health care for French prisoners. In particular, the impact of unités hospitalières spécialement aménagées (UHSAs; "specially equipped hospital units"), the full-time inpatient psychiatric wards for inmates created in 2010, remains unknown. The aim of this study was to describe the overall patterns of psychiatric hospitalization for detained people in France during 2016. METHODS The study was conducted by using a national psychiatric hospital discharge database. The authors identified incarcerated people who were hospitalized in UHSAs, general psychiatric hospitals, maximum-security unités pour malades difficiles (UMDs; "units for difficult patients"), and day treatment hospitals for inmates known as services médico-psychologiques régionaux (SMPRs; "regional medical-psychological services"), from January 1 to December 31, 2016. RESULTS In 2016, 4,392 incarcerated patients (7,027 admissions) were hospitalized (92% males). Overall, 1,944 patients were hospitalized in UHSAs, 1,787 in general psychiatric hospitals, 97 in UMDs, and 1,465 in SMPRs. That year, 815 patients (19%) were admitted to at least two different facilities. The mean cumulative length of stay per patient was 86.7 days (95% confidence interval=80.1-93.3; median=27 days), with longer durations of stay in UMDs and SMPRs than in UHSAs and general psychiatric hospitals. CONCLUSIONS Despite the recent creation of UHSAs, the hospitalization of inmates in general psychiatric hospitals remains frequent in France. Serum Haptoglobin (Hp) binds free hemoglobin, affecting heme clearance and free radical production. Of the three Hp phenotypes, Hp 1-1 has the greatest effect on free hemoglobin clearance. AIM To determine if individuals with Hp 1-1 phenotype have different rates of early perihematomal edema formation as compared to those with Hp 2-1 and Hp 2-2. METHODS We determined Hp phenotype, intracranial hemorrhage volume, and rate of early change in perihematomal volume in participants from three prospectively collected intracranial hemorrhage cohorts. The association of Hp phenotypes 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, with early change in perihematomal volume, while controlling for key clinical characteristics was analyzed using a multivariate model. FINDINGS One-hundred and sixty-six participants were included 73 (44%) female, 41 ( 25%) African Americans, 34 (20%) diabetics, 133 (80%) with hypertension, and 75 (45%) active smokers. There were 15 subjects with Hp phenotype 1-1, 86 with 2-1, and 65 with 2-2. In fully adjusted analysis, Hp 1-1 had a significantly increased estimated mean rate of early change in perihematomal volume at 1.15 (95% confidence interval 0.58-1.71) as compared to all other Hp 2-1 or Hp 2-2 containing phenotypes (0.30, 95% confidence interval 0.06-0.54; 0.29 95% CI 0.02-0.56). Neither mortality nor discharge mRS differed between Hp phenotypes. CONCLUSION Haptoglobin phenotype is associated with early change in perihematomal volume. Hp 1-1 phenotype had significantly increased mean rate of early change in perihematomal volume within the first 96 h, suggesting that haptoglobin phenotype may be a key player in understanding the multiphasic progression of perihematomal volume in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. A larger prospective observational study is warranted.Aquatically breeding harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) males use underwater vocalizations during the breeding season to establish underwater territories, defend territories against intruder males, and possibly to attract females. Vessel noise overlaps in frequency with these vocalizations and could negatively impact breeding success by limiting communication space. In this study, we investigated whether harbour seals employed anti-masking strategies to maintain communication in the presence of vessel noise in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Harbour seals in this location did not sufficiently adjust source levels or acoustic parameters of vocalizations to compensate for acoustic masking. Instead, for every 1 dB increase in ambient noise, signal excess decreased by 0.84 dB, indicating a reduction in communication space when vessels passed. We suggest that harbour seals may already be acoustically advertising at or near a biologically maximal sound level and therefore lack the ability to increase call amplitude to adjust to changes in their acoustic environment. This may have significant implications for this aquatically breeding pinniped, particularly for populations in high noise regions.All mammals undergo weaning from milk to solid food. read more This process requires substantial changes to mammalian oropharyngeal function. The coordination of swallowing and respiration is a crucial component of maintaining airway function throughout feeding and matures over infant development. However, how this coordination is affected by weaning is unknown. In this study, we ask how changes in posture, neural maturation and food properties associated with the weaning affect coordination of respiration and swallowing in a validated infant pig model. We recorded seven piglets feeding before and during the weaning age with liquid milk in a bottle and in a bowl, and solid feed in a bowl. Using videofluoroscopy synchronized with respiration, we found (i) the delay in the onset of inspiration after swallowing does not change with head position, (ii) the delay is different between solid food and bowl drinking at the same age and (iii) the delay increases over time when bottle feeding, suggesting a maturational effect. Significant changes in aerodigestive coordination occur prior to and post-weaning, resulting in distinctive patterns for liquid and solid food.
